Synchronizing messages
 

I use outlook express for all email and newsgroups.
I also use briefcase to synchronize files between my desktop and notebook.
Is there a way I can synchronize my email messages in the same way?

OE uses Identities to keep mail separated. Each Identity has it's own
{USER_ID} that is unique between them all. Since they are different, you
would have to have the same Identity set up on each machine. You could then
sync the dbx files and have the same messages between the two machines.

Now the bad part, you can't have messages on one machine and some on the
other machine then sync the two and expect those to still be there, one will
be overwritten. To get around this, you would have to create a new folder
and name it say the date (11820006) and move the newest mail into it. Copy
the the 1182006.dbx file and the Folders.dbx file to a temp folder on which
ever machine you will be wanting to put them. Then use Import to import
those messages.

Once you have those imported, you could then sync the machines and have the
same messages on each.

Now, here's the XP question, is the User profile name the same on both
machines? Maybe, maybe not. If not, create a new folder on the machine with
all the emails such as C:\Mail
Next go to Tools | Options | Maintenance tab then press the Store Folder
then press the Change button. Navigate to the C:\Mail folder and select it
then pres OK. Now close OE and reopen it. When you do, OE will move the
messages to the C:\Mail folder automatically. Now you have a central
location for any machine to be able to use these message stores.

Next you have to get the same {USER_ID} on both machines, you would have to
export the HKCU\Identities, HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager
and HKCU\Software\Microsoft\WAB subkeys then take those .reg files to the
other machine.

Before importing those key, export the same set of keys for backup purposes
should you decide to go back to the old Identity.

Now, import the keys and copy the DBX files to C:\Mail folder and all is
well. Now both machines have the same {USER_ID}. If you get mail on one
machine or the other, you will need to import those messages like you did
before with the date each time before importing.
