Have experienced several instances where a mail was sent to me with an
attachment, but the mail I received had the attachment content embedded in
the mail itself and no attachment was indicated.
The size of the mail reflected the included attachment but when opened, only
the actual message displayed. The presence of the attachment data could be
seen when looking under Properties Details Message Source. If I Reply to
the mail or Forward it, the spurious attachment data is not included
At present, all of these corrupted mails are coming from one sender but that
sender has been able to send attachments OK in the past.- I am currently
receiving mail with attachments OK from other sources.

Any suggestions ?

When an image is inserted/embedded into the body of an HTML message, it's
still carried as an attachment to the email.

What you're seeing when you Reply To or Forward such a message depends on
the source of the inserted data. If you enable "Read all messages in plain
text" and then Forward the message, you may be able to see the attachment.

The above notwithstanding, does this correspondent send messages to you
using MS Outlook with RichText or HTML formatting and/or an AOL account?

If messages are sent using the Exchange family of mail programs
(includes Windows Messaging or Outlook97/98/2000+) and the option to use
Rich Text Format is selected, it puts the RTF message (and any attached
files) in an attachment called WINMAIL.DAT (application/ms-tnef). But
this attachment is useless to most other mail programs. In some mail
programs (e.g. Outlook Express), the attachment won't even be visible.

The Exchange user can turn off the RTF option for messages to selected
recipients. Note that if sending via an Exchange server, the Exchange
server administrator may be overriding the mail client settings. In
this case, the administrator will need to make changes on the server.
In some cases, the Exchange server actually removes the attachments to
some recipients.

Thank you for that explanation - that would appear to be exactly what is
happening. Looking at the "Message Source" in the Details tab under
Properties of the mail I can see the WINMAIL.DAT and ms-tnef references as
follows :-

I am waiting to hear from the sender to check if he is using the RTF
option - the Message Source indicates Outlook but I thought he was using
plain text and can see a reference to that - is it possible to identify that
anywhere in the message ?

The presence of the WINMAIL.DAT indicates that he did not send in plain
text format. But it may be that the Exchange server is overriding his
