Hitting Alt 8 key
My husband was told in an email to hit alt 8 while in the email (he uses OE 6
on windows xp home edition sp2). Why did he do this? Who knows, but now when he types anything on his computer, things get all jumbled and jarbled. Here are some examples of what happens: type f and a semicolon gets inserted in front of the f type g and an apostropy is inserted in front of the g type an n and it inserts itself in front of the letter typed previously type p and an r automatically inserts itself right after the p. When the r is typed, the p inserts itself in front of it. (sort of reminds me of cell phone predictive texting) Anyway, this is very frustrating as it pretty much stops him from playing on his own computer and hogs mine. Can someone PLEASE help me? I checked out the character directory in programs/accessories but could not find anything related to alt8. I just know he did something really easy to fix, but for the life of me I can't figure it out. Thanks in advance for your help. |

Try doing a system Restore to a date previous to his hitting Alt8.

Alt+Gr? European style keyboard? Try hitting the same combination again
and see if it fixes the problem. No, ALT 8, the number. It's an R Tec Smart Keyboard. I tried hitting the
same keys when the garble was first noticable...it didn't "undo" the damage. I went into keyboard properties to see if, by some strange reason he did something to the drivers..they are all current and there don't appear to be any errors. I'm at a total loss...I thought about uninstall, reinstall the keyboard... I checked out the site you gave me...it wasn't much help, but thanks for offering it up! I do appreciate the assistance you've offered! "Jim Pickering" wrote: Alt+Gr? European style keyboard? Try hitting the same combination again and see if it fixes the problem. Ok, I did this while trying to type a message in an open email as well as
typing in a password and I still got the same garble. Thanks for your help though. It's still appreciated (:O) "mac" wrote: Try Alt+Left Shift to toggle between installed languages. HTH -- Regards Steve. MS-MVP. OE. [DTS] |

Hi momranger,
Can you use the Alt key to enter other characters. Try holding the Alt key while typing 36 from the numerical keypad. When released this should produce a dollar sign ($). There might be a problem with the Alt key on the keyboard or sticky keys is in use. Check Accessibility Options Control Panel for this possibility. -- Tim K. aka Kuay Tim MS-MVP - Outlook Express Lynnwood, WA * "momranger" wrote in message ... Thanks Squire. However, it didn't work. Hey Tim, typed in alt 36 and got a spade sign.
checked out accessibility in the control panel and it says sticky fingers is NOT in use. Keyboard is about 4 years old...will try swapping it out with another one and see if things improve. Thanks for all your help. Will let y'all know the outcome of the next experiment. Tee "Kuay Tim" wrote: Hi momranger, Can you use the Alt key to enter other characters.
