A while back I reported a problem with OE, when I click on a newsgroup that
I was subscribed to, it automatically scrolls down, so I have to scroll back to the top to see the most recent posts. In this case, I am sorting by Sent column, Descending(The most recent is at the top). You can find the original thread he http://groups.google.com/group/micro...ab9b83516a7274 I found the reason for this annoying problem. OE automatically scrolls the view to the most recent unread message, which can be an old message, scrolling the view by more than a page length. It then checks for new messages, and when there are new messages, it does not scroll back to these new messages, making the user think that there were no new messages. To reproduce this problem, follow these steps: - Subscribe to a newsgroup with a lot of messages. At least with hundreds of messages. - Select the most recent 200 to 500 messages. The exact number is not important as long as it's greater than the number of messages that can be seen at one time. - Mark those messages as read, either by right-click, or using Edit--Mark as Read. - Click on a different newsgroup, or folder, such as Inbox. - Go back to the newsgroup. You will notice that the scroll bar is not at the top, and most messages are marked as read, except the bottom most message or two in the view. - OE will now check for new messages, and when there are new ones(You may have to wait for few minutes), and this is the "bug", it doesn't scroll the view to show these new messages if checking for new messages took a long time, longer than the time it takes for OE to finish loading the list. If OE finished loading the list, then afterward the new messages arrived, then it's not scrolled correctly. If OE is still loading the list, and the news server responded quickly before OE finished, then OE will take these new messages into account, and scroll the view correctly. So this procedure may not be easily replicated because it depends on how long it takes for OE to load the list and set the view, and how quickly the news server responds. - If you press the tab key once. This will highlight the most unread message and show the reason why it didn't scroll as expected. This is an annoying problem because many people read the last 100 posts or so, and not interested in reading old messages. When they check for new messages, OE doesn't scroll to them, so all they see are read messages. One workaround is to mark all messages as read by right clicking the newsgroup and click "Catch up", but this is not desirable sometimes. Thank you |
