Backup my threads - Best way to?
 

Hi All,

I backup threads I'm interested in (usually the ones I initiated) by copying
them into shadow user folders I created in OE. Despite the fact that my
approach doesn't preserve the thread structure, I can still sense that
structure by viewing the shadow folders in date order. My primary purpose
is to prevent old threads from being automatically deleted.

While I could avoid the automatic deletion by un-checking that option, it
seems too wasteful of disk space. Is there a better way of backing up
selected threads?

If you drag the threads into a user created folder, then they won't
automatically be deleted when they are deleted from the server, which you
have no control of by unchecking anything.

You can do a File | Save As and save them to your HDD in a folder you create
and get them out of OE all together.

The View options you get in a local folder are the ones that you are using
in your Inbox. Chances are that you don't use View Group messages by
conversation there so that may be why you are assuming that you lose
threading. You just have to enable it (e.g. press Alt-V,V,G).

Alternatively, you could leave that option alone (so you don't accidentally
confuse yourself with other Local folders eg)
and use Find Message (e.g. Ctrl-Shift-F,Alt-o,F4,Enter,Enter)
and then use Alt-V,V,G in it. That option is reset each time you do a Find
so there would be significantly less chance of confusion that way.

WOW! That's great: it's exactly what I wanted, and to think it was right
under my nose all these years.

Of course, using your guidance, I clicked on View | Current View | Group
Messages By Conversation to toggle that option because I'd never remember
that key sequence.

I did notice, as you hinted, that electing that option in any local folder
or file applies it to all locals. I checked other Local Folders with that
option elected but I didn't perceive any difference my InBox, which is the
only other thing I care about (slightly: I mainly use FireFox for browsing
and WebMail for email.)

Hi Robert,

I just noticed that one cannot mark conversations as "read" in local
folders. It's a convenient feature, but I find myself able to live without
it in the local-folder context :-)

You can highlight any message in the thread (conversation) and press Ctrl-T
to mark the thread (conversation) as read.
