Hello,

I'm having a problem with my inbox receiving messages and sorting them
by the sender's name instead of the way they are received. I know this
sounds like an easy thing to correct, but I have gone to ViewSort By
and set the settings so that the messages would arrive as received by
date, in order of sent, and also in descending order, so that the
latest message would be on top of list. As many times as I repeat this
action, it doesn't stick, the messages are still being received and
catagorized by the name of the sender whereever that person's name is
on the list.. This makes me overlook new messages because I don't see
them. Is there something I can do to correct this other than the usual
settings, and what exactly causes this problem to keep re-occurring?
Could it be anything to do with saving too many messages in the inbox
so that I can refer to them again?

Thank you for any help you can offer,
Sanandra

In View | *Current View*, is anything selected except Show all messages? If
so, uncheck them.

I don't believe it is because of your Inbox size, but that will get you in
trouble in other ways.

A general warning:

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupted. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move
your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no
folders are open. Then: FileWork Offline (or double click Working Online in
the Status Bar). FileFolderCompact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

In ToolsOptionsMaintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.

And backup often.

You can Hide read messages.

Try creating a new Identity.
If that fixes the problem, import the message from the old Identity.

Bruce,

Nothing is/was selected except Show all messages. I also learned just
recently here about not archiving mail in default OE folders, so since
then I have been creating and storing mail in other folders. I don't
know how much 100 MB is, how can I figure how much space that is? I did
the manual compacting and always do it when I get the popup box asking
me to do it. Is it better to do it manually than wait until it asks me?
I did not have Compact messages in background checked.
Thanks,
Sanandra

Ron,

I have tried to create a new identity several times in the past, but
always get hung up at a certain point and can't progress any further.
It's not fresh in my mind now what it was, but I hope that won't be
necessary.
Thanks,
Sanandra

Do you want to sort by name, or time/date received. If the former, check
From. If the later, check Sent. You can only choose one option.

If the settings keep changing, you may have a damaged identity. File |
Identity | Add New Identity. Create a new one and test it. If all is well,
you can import your messages from the old identity and delete it.

When that problem is resolved, you can make folders for specific people and
use message rules to divert the mail to the specific folders if you wish.

Compacting when you see the prompt is fine. Just make sure you don't touch
anything until it's completed.

The size of each folder is shown by viewing the dbx files in the Message
Sto

ToolsOptionsMaintenanceStore folder will reveal the location
of your Outlook Express files. Press the Tab key to highlight the folder
location, then Ctrl+C. Close OE, then StartRunCtrl+V will put the location
in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write the
location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer.

In WindowsXP, 2K & 3K, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default
marked as hidden. To view these files in Explorer, you must enable
Show Hidden Files and Folders under StartControl PanelFolder
OptionsView.

I want to sort the messages by time/date received with the most recent
mail at the top of the list. I do not have Sent under View but I
checked Sort by received in descending order. I just had a thought: I
wonder the little icons at the left of the inbox, the flag, etc that
shows it was read.would have any effect on the settings changing all
the time. Would using these icons cause these settings to go off? After
I set it this morning, it went off again. The cursor too, is acting
erratically; by that I mean it jumps wherever it wants whenever.Maybe
this is a separate problem.

I have Windows XPPro SP2. I use Firefox as a browser instead of IE
although that is still running.

Thank you,
Sanandra

Yes: View | Sort By | Received & Sort Descending. If the settings keep
changing, try a new identity.

The icons to the left would have no effect on this.

Does the cursor jump around in other programs? i.e. your browser?

Have you tried just clicking Received at the top of the column?
Click again to reverse the order.

Bruce,

That is how I have them set. If I need to try a new identity, I will
try again to do that.

No, I haven't noticed the cursor jumping around in other programs; only
when I'm typing.Another irritating thing it does is, when I left click
to place the cursor needle in a new place, it will not move from the
former place. I have to click several times to get it to move,

Thanks,
Sanandra

Frank,

Yes, I just tried that but that just inverts all the messages from
first to last and back in the exact order they were. But when they come
in and are listed by senders name, they go to wherever in the list that
persons name is, so they are all over. That's why I say I have to look
for new messages so that I find the new ones.

Ron suggestion to hide read messages would allow me to be able to find
the new messages easier, but I would like to keep them visible so that
I can refer to them when I need to.

Thank you for your help,
Sanandra
