This is not a new behavior with OE 6, just a question I've been meaning to
ask forever. When I respond to most email messages, OE puts a long vertical
line next to the original quoted text. If I want to intersperse my response
with the original text, the vertical line doesn't break when I hit the
return key. So, unless I format my text differently, it just blends in with
the original.

If I change my replay's format to plain text, the vertical line vanishes,
but it's not replace by anything, so that doesn't help.

Is there a way to force OE to use the arrow sign in quoted text, instead
of that damned line? Or, is there a way to break the line when hitting the
return key? Maybe a key combo I'm not aware of?

OE uses the carats, () for Plain Text, and the Quote Line for HTML. Both
can be disabled via Tools | Options | Send | Plain Text & HTML Settings.

If you want to keep the Quote Line, after you click Reply, put the cursor
where you want to intersperse text and use the Decrease Indentation on the
format bar to break the line.

Tools | Options | Send
Set you email and news to use Plain Text.
Uncheck the option to Reply to messages in the format in which they were
sent.

However, messages that were sent in HTML still may not get the quote
character () because OE uses MIME/Quoted Printable to send HTML messages
but doesn't know how to handle MIME/Quoted Printable once it's in Plain Text
mode. This has been a problem since OE4, but none of the OE teams since
then has figured out how to fix it. I'm not sure they really even tried.

Bruce:
Your CD drawer doubles as a beer tap. Place large glass on the drawer and
hit CTRL-LeftShift-ALT-Spacebar-~^~^-B to dispense beer. Use lower case "b"
for light beer. Put it on my tab.

Thanks for the response.

There's a plague of "haven't really tried" in many product areas. IMHO, it
points to the value of waterboarding in corporate settings. We can only
hope.
