Default Where does OE keep it's mail folders?

Tech Support should read there own help files.
It is crazy to delete the old Identities.
http://www.tiscali.co.uk/help/
Clicking email, then Setting up Outlook Express shows how to add an email
account.

Deleting Identities does not delete the Identities emails.
In OE, Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store Folder button will show the
location of the current Identity's storage files.
Go up a folder should show the other Identities Store Folders.
If the folders are there, you can import the messages into the current
Identity.

Ron,
Essentially, I was talked through setting up the new connection to a new
ISP by phone and followed instructions from the Technical Support
department.
a. Why did changing ISPs require a new OE Identity? Sorry I do not know.
The new connection was set up and in the process a new identity was
introduced.
b. Why didn't you add the ISP to the old OE Identity? I did not know I
could.
c. Can you switch to your old OE Identities? No. They were deleted in
the process of setting up the new connection.

Just seen these very useful replies which are near to my problem.

Have just changed ISP and therefore have setup a new identity for emails
in OE 6. In the process of setting up with wizard I have 'lost' my
email folders from before. This muddle has resulted from setting up
several identities with my old ISP, I cannot remember how this occurred
(senior moments come quickly with age). Now, after doing a search for
dbx files I can find a very long list of all the folders. There are
some folders duplicated each with its own asociated different identities
and I wish to import the folders into my OE under my new identity. How
can I see which ones I need; one way seems to be by inspection and only
selecting by recent dates, say all afetr 1 Feb 08 and copying these into
a 'store' folder on desktop and then importing into OE under my new
identity?

There are bound to be some duplicate emails lurking and I should prefer
not to lose anything.

Is there a simple and relative easy answer please with minimum hassle?
Most grateful for advice please.

I think I now know not to mess with identities.
regards, brett.

In WinXP, Win2K and Win2K03, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by

enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start Control Panel
Folder Options View (cf.

In Windows Explorer, search for .DBX files. Any found which are not
located in your current store will most likely be those from your OE5

(select) OE6 (select) From a store directory Point the import
wizard to the old identity's store location.

If you deleted the old identities, you probably deleted all the mail as
well.

Do an Advanced search and include Hidden Files and Folders. Search for:

*.dbx

If you find the old files, post back before you do anything. If you don't
find any then DBXpress run in Extract From Disk Mode /may/ be able to
recover your messages as it can read directly from the hard drive:

Default Where does OE keep it's mail folders?

Ron,
Thanks, I have opened a folder on my desktop in anticipation of moving all
the dbx files/foders to it by copy and paste, or, drag and drop?

I presume I can then import these into OE and new identity. From there I
can examine each, tediously, to determine what I want to keep or delete?

Any pitfalls please?

The new ISP was late sending their CD and installation instructions; I was
cut off from the old and connected to the new before I knew it. Efficiency!
These things happen even in the best of circles as I have found with doing a
reinstall of Win XP on my daughter's machine and using the OEM's WinXP CD -
it is not all that easy or straightforward using the support staff of the
OEM of the computer or software.

In OE, Tools, Options, Maintenance tab, Store Folder button, right click,
Select All, right click, copy.
Close OE.
Start, Run, right click, Paste.
OK
NOTE: in XP the dbx files may be hidden, in My Computer, Tools, Folder
Options, View tab, check Show hidden files.

Close OE.

I am assuming that you are wanting the Inbox and Sent Items from each
Identity.
Open one of the other Store Folders.
Copy any folders that you want to the desktop folder.
Rename inbox.dbx to a.dbx.
Rename sent items.dbx to as.dbx.
Close that store folder and got to the next.
Copy any folders that you want to the desktop folder.
Rename inbox.dbx to b.dbx.
Rename sent items.dbx to bs.dbx.
Repeat for remaining Store Folders.

Open OE. Create new folders in OE to match the dbx files in the desktop
folder.
Open each folder.
I am going to call these folders, a, as, b, bs, c, cs, d, ds, ......
Close OE.

Move the dbx files from the desktop folder to the current Identity's Store
Folder.
Say yes to overwrite the a.dbx with a.dbx, etc.

Further to my subsequent reply post at 16/2/08 15:39, in my Win XP Home
(SP2) OE6 ToolsOptionsMaintenanceTabStore Folder Button clicking this
opens a mini window Titled "Your personal message store is located in the
following folder" and in the slot underneath is given the present
location. Underneath the location there are three buttons "Change ..."
plus "OK" and "Cancel". This does not correspond with your "right click,

I can, after enabling 'Show hidden files', do a search for all files of

identities and their associated folders.

What a business !

Default Where does OE keep it's mail folders?

You are selecting so you can copy and know the location of you current
messages.
Unless your other store folders have user created folders with distinctive
names and you remember those names, then everything will be What a business
!

Modified directions:
In OE, Tools, Options, Maintenance tab, Store Folder button, right click,
Select All, right click, copy.
Close OE.
Start, Run, right click, Paste.
OK

Close OE.

Write down part of the Store Folder location.
The first six characters after the { bracket.
Example, for \Identities\{9754006D-2A61-47BF-8B5D-097A0A6CA84C}, write down
975400.

Start, Run, OK.
Go 'up a folder' until you get to the Identities folder.
Open one of the Identities that is not your current Store Folder.
Copy any dbx files that you want to the desktop folder.
In the desktop folder, rename inbox.dbx to a.dbx.

Close OE.

Start, Run, OK.
Move the dbx files from the desktop folder to the current Identity's Store
Folder.
Say yes to overwrite the a.dbx with a.dbx, etc.

This will put all of the other Identity folders in the current Identity as
separate folders.
Folders containing duplicate messages can be deleted.

I can get to "Select all" with a right click but I thought it would only
select all of my present (new) identity messages and not all the old ones
?
