OE won't send, won't start up a second time...
 

OE6 opens fine. It reads new mail fine. It reads new newsgroup messages
fine.
It will not send anything. It just sits there until it tells me it isn't
working.
If I close it, it will not reopen. It just ignores me, and then says that
OE is already running.
When I shut the computer off, it says that "O" is still running and I have
to close it before the computer can shut down.
However, when I do a ctl-alt-del, it doesn't show any programs running; "O",
OE, or anything else.
When I reboot, it happens all over again.
I compressed the files; that didn't change anything.
I just installed Norton Systemworks, but the problem didn't start
immediately, so I don't think they are related.
I have run various virus and spyware programs, but they don't show anything.

Any idea what is going on? What is this "O"?

I have posted this question twice; apparently my wife's computer consented
to post the message finally!

But, I am having the same problem with two XP computers; the ME computer
seems fine. Thanks.

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity (File
Identities Add new identity). Assuming all is well, import messages from
the old Identity before deleting it (File Identities Manage Identities).

To avoid such corruption in futu

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://insideoe.tomsterdam.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if
Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only).

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.
