receiving attachments
What I"m curious is to WHY or HOW it happened.

Malware is a common cause for an unwanted registry change. Why, or how is
usually a mystery. There is always the standard: OE Happens. I'm glad it is fixed and will document this episode with the hopes to help others in the future, should someone be blessed with what you just went through.
