With Windows XP Home Edition I use Outlook Express. Have you ever
experienced a problem with attachments? With me, I can only preview my
e-mail should it have attachments. Opening any e-mail that contains
attachments always generates a GPF.

Do you mean a GIF? Graphic attachments are by default already open following
the text of an e-mail. You can change the behavior so they do not show
automatically if you wish.

See this article about disabling automatic viewing of graphic attachments:

It's important to know the Details. When you get an "Illegal Operation"
or "encountered a problem" message, there is usually a Details button
(In WinME press Alt/D), or a "click here" link to see the error report.
When you click on the button/link, it will give a message like: XXXX
caused an error in YYYY and a bunch of register nonsense or it will list
the Appname XXXX and Modname YYYY. The XXXX and YYYY are important to
identify the cause and solution. You can ignore the rest of the
message.

Also include operating system that you are using.

Are these messages with attachments files that you asked for? It's not
unusual for virus or spam messages to cause an error when viewed. If
you turn off the Preview Pane (View, Layout) in Outlook Express you can
select and delete a message without OE trying to open it. For OE5+ you
can add a button to the Tool Bar to toggle the Preview Pane off and on.

If these are attachments that you asked for, if you turn off the Preview
Pane (View, Layout) can you select a message with an attachment and then
save the attachments (File, Save Attachments)? If so, can you then
successfully open the saved files?

Open the Help menu and read this article: To add an e-mail or newsgroup
account.

Are you sure you cross-posted to enough newsgroups?

Detaching and reading files is not a problem. It's just that when I see
Outlook has a new message in the in-box with attachment, I do not dare
double-click to open. Outlook will crash if I do.

1. Start a new thread for a new topic.

2. Cross-posting is considered bad manners. Cross-posting to as many as you
did is down right. And from the looks of it you didn't even post your
question to the group that would be the obvious starting point.

3. Did you ask your ISP how to do this?

The help file in the program is pretty self-explanatory and that is the
reason we don't have any article on the Microsoft suppport site on this topic.
