Default cannot read newsgroups with OE!

Since March 26th, I can't read any of my Newsgroup accounts using
Outlook Express 6. When i try to download the headers, it appears to
be downloading something as the blue progress bar changes. But at the
bottom it states "0 messages -500 unread 1000 not downloaded". Note
the minus unread.

Anyone else having similar problems?

While in a newsgroup: View | Current View. Make sure Show All Messages and
Group Messages By Conversation are checked.

Tools | Options | Read. Uncheck: Get XXX headers at a time. Then, right
click on the newsgroup in the Folder Tree | Properties | Local File | Reset.
Switch to another folder and then back and all available messages will be
downloaded again.

Or go to Tools | Options | Maintenance | Clean Up Now and choose the group,
or server at the top and then Reset.

It would be a good idea to compact your folders when you're done.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are
open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the
Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

My personal preference is to disregard synchronizing and rather have OE
check for news when it checks for mail. Tools | Accounts | News. Check: "
Include this account...........".

Windows version?

What newsserver(s)?
==========================
General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and do not attempt to
close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting
is taking place.

- Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause
corruption (i.e., loss of messages), it provides no additional protection,
and even Symantec says it's not necessary:

QP
Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that
are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans
incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and
email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To
make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep
Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have
the most recent virus definitions.

Default cannot read newsgroups with OE!

1. Create a new named identity (Tools | Identities | Add new identity).

2. Configure at least one of your Mail accounts in this identity but uncheck
the option "Include this account when receiving or synchronising" for now.

3. Configure only this newsserver in this identity: msnews.microsoft.com

4. Download the list of newsgroups on the newsserver then subscribe to at
least this newsgroup
(microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlook express).

5. Test to see if you see the same behavior.

6. Add at least the news.cable.ntworld.com newsserver and test for the same
behavior.

= If you do not see the behavior in hte MS newsgroup but see it in any
others, the problem is on the newsserver's end.

= If you do not see the behavior in any newsgroups, your old Identity may
be damaged, especially if its the default Main Identity: (a) compact all
folders in the old identity, (b) import messages from the old identity into
the new one (don't bother with newsgroups), and then (c) delete the old one
(File Identities Manage Identities).

To avoid such corruption in future, see the caveats I posted in my first
reply.

I found the solution, for those still interested. I live in the UK, so
the time and date had changed for 31st March which meant I had to
verify the time and date for the computer. However, I mistakenly typed
in 2009 for the year. Anyway, after changing the date back, everything
is fine. So if you get a fool posting here with the same problem
around the time when the clocks change, tell them to check the date on
their computer!
