OE6 Backup Restore Problem
 

I rearranged some folders on my HD but when I opened OE6, the opening window had
no messages. I imported what I thought was the backup file and all seemed to go
well, but when I checked the dates of several key files, the dates were not 2005
or 2006. I can only assume that I imported an older backup folder. How that's
possible, I don't know, but I do have a folder that has message dates up to
3-4-2006. Unfortunately, when I try to import this folder, I get a message
window "Import from OE5" saying: "The specified message store could not be
opened. It may be in use by Outlook Express." This is followed by an "Import
Messages" window that says: "No messages can be found in this folder or another
application is running that has the required files open. Please select another
folder or try closing applications that may have files open." I have no clue as
to what to do next. Suggestions, please!

Hi Bill,

If you inadvertently moved the OE message store folder a new folder would
have been created with virgin DBX files when OE started. It should be
possible to search for Inbox.dbx to find the old message store folder. It
will be necessary to trace all files found to their respective folders to
find the old message store folder.

Note: The Folders.dbx (master index) file is necessary for the import
process to work.
DBX files are hidden by default in Win XP and Win 2000. Include hidden files
and folders in the search and set the folder view to include them -- if this
has not already been done.

Try importing from the old message store folder's present location or move
it to the desktop.

Thanks for your reply! OK, I did a search for Index.dbx and found three in these
locations:
C:\Document and Settings\Bill\My Documents\JWH Backup 5-Mar-2006 139KB ***this
was the original location ***
C:\My Documents\JWH Email Backup 4-Mar-2006 1,993KB *** this was what I had
hoped would be my new location ***
C:\Program Files\Outlook Express Quick Backup\Main Identity 4-Mar-2006 507KB

I searched also for "Folders.dbx" and found three in the same locations as
above. I didn't understand your comment about DBX files being hidden in XP by
default, but I must have my search parameters already set to find them.

I presume that the largest file (1,993KB) is my complete one!

Please outline what should be the next steps in sequence? I don't want to risk
any mistakes here!

Hi Bill,

Sorry I had to go out today. The import process is pretty straight forward.
This Microsoft KB article explains the procedure. Importing messages will
not affect any messages in the current OE message store folder.

Well, I finally managed to get the whole thing restored after I went back and
re-read your initial message re "store folder". I had neglected to check my
initial default store folder location and used an older backup.

One more question - now that I have changed my default location in
ToolsOptionsMaintenanceStore Folder, can I assume that this new folder will
be updated each time OE is closed?

Whatever is specified in ToolsOptionsMaintenanceStore Folder is the
folder that OE is using for its data files. Unless you change that
value, it will not change.
