why the date changes on 4 emails?
Something weird -----
I have an OE 6 folder named SENT 2004. Emails I sent in 2004 are kept in that folder. Today, March 6, I created another Identity, XYZ 2004. I imported folders and messages into it from the current identity, JBS. Now I discover that 4 emails in the SENT 2004 folder in the XYZ 2004 identity are dated today's date (and all have the same time), but they are 2004 emails. In checking the SENT 2004 folder in the JBS identity, I see those 4 emails are dated 1/11/2006 5:18 PM -- that is about the date I imported the folder from OE 5.5. Can anyone explain why the date changes on those 4 emails? Jack |
why the date changes on 4 emails?
The date change occurs when you import the mails. It does not change the
original message at all as you can see if you highlight the message and press Ctrl+F3 to examine the headers. It's just an indication of the last date on which the file was "touched", i.e., modified. -- Jim Pickering, MVP, Outlook Express https://mvp.support.microsoft.com/pr...8-1171988A62D6 Please deliver feedback to the newsgroup, so that others can be helped. Jim,
But why those 4 in particular, and, now they are undoubtedly out of the chronological order of the rest of the emails. Jack "Jim Pickering" wrote in message ... why the date changes on 4 emails?
Did you originally import those 4 messages from another mail client?
Each mail messages has multiple time stamps. You can see these in File, Properties, Details. When you look at the list of messages in Microsoft IE3 Internet Mail or IE4+ Outlook Express, the Received time is when the message was received by your ISP's mail server. The server supplies the time. This is the first (top most) of possibly several "Received:" lines in the message header. Each mail server that a message passes through adds its own Received line. These are in reverse order, so that the bottom most one listed is the first server that received the message from the sender. When you open or print a message, the time displayed is from the sender's PC when he wrote the message, not necessarily when he transmitted it (depends on the mail client). The time comes from his PC. This is the "Date:" line in the message header. A Sent Message would not have any Received headers. Some mail clients don't put in the Date header in saved messages, it's only inserted as the message is sent to the mail server. On import, if OE doesn't find the date, it will use today's date. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Jack" wrote in message ... why the date changes on 4 emails?
Mike,
They were on Win 98 pc with OE 5.5. I had them kept in an OE folder named Sent 2004. I used OE Freebie Back up or OE Express Back up to get all OE files onto a Win XP pc with OE 6. Once that was accomplished, I created the JBS identity and moved them into that identity. This must have been 11 Jan 06. I removed the Main identity. Yesterday (6 Mar), I imported everything from JBS to identity XYZ 2004. The folder named Sent 2004 was therefore copied into identity XYZ 2004, and, the 4 files in question then had dates of 6 Mar 06. They are the only one with crazy dates. why the date changes on 4 emails?
Mike,
On import, if OE doesn't find the date, it will use today's date. I think I sort of know why the 4 emails have no date in the header -- they were initially a message I inputted on a website, and I copied them or somehow managed to get a copy into OE for my own record. I guess that resolves the date anomaly. I was worried something was going wrong. Thanks, Jack "Michael Santovec" wrote in message ... why the date changes on 4 emails?
If you know what the date was supposed to be, or some reasonable date
that you want to use, you can edit the messages to give them a date. - Do a File, Save As to save the message to an *.EML file, or drag-and-drop the message to Windows folder - Then edit the file in Notepad or other text editor. Insert a date header, After the subject header is a reasonable place. A sample date header would look like: Date: Tue, 7 Mar 2006 16:57:27 -0500 - Save the file. - With OE5+, you can drag-and-drop the message back to an OE folder. - You can then delete the original message. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Jack" wrote in message ...
