E-mail or posts with attachments
 

Sometimes I get emails with jpeg attachments and when I open them the
images are displayed below the text. This applies to attachments in
binary newsgroups, as well. I know that jpeg attachments can be
dodgy, so what I would like to know is, if the images appear below the
email or post, are the files actually opened, or is it that only by
double-clicking the file attachment and opening them that way could
they create a potential danger?

I use AVG Free (without email scanner) and thought that I could
right-click an email or post in OE before opening it and I would have
the option to Scan with AVG just to make sure, but this is not the
case, unfortunately. I can scan with AVG if I save emails or posts to
Desktop before opening it, but would any infection they may contain be
released by the "save as" action, please? It seems unlikely, but I
thought I would ask...

That is how OE works. JPG, GIF and BMP graphics automatically show a copy
after the text of a message. They are usually of no security concern. If you
want to eliminate seeing them, you have two choices.

To prevent graphic attachments to be automatically displayed in messages you
receive, either set to read in Plain Text, or see:

Thank you both for the speedy replies.

Bruce : I do like to see the graphics below the text; it saves having
to save elsewhere and then delete if necessary, and it`s reassuring to
know that they pose little risk.
I read the article you linked to, Ken. I knew that installing e-mail
scanning software was superfluous, but didn`t realise that anti-virus
programs scanned files like jpegs automatically before OE displays
them. Good to know.

With the understanding that the display of the JPEG in a separate area below
the message is not the equivalent of opening the attachment, try the
following:

OE Tools | Options | Read | Read all messages in plain text.

The only attachments that OE will open in the preview pane are JPG, GIF
and BMP files which are harmless. Having OE display them in the Preview
Pane will actually protect your from some Trojan Horses. One type uses
an attachment with a name such as IMAGE.JPG.exe hoping that you think
it's a JPG rather an a program. (The IMAGE part varies and the .exe can
be any type of program including .com, .bat, .pif, .vbs, etc.). If you
have told Windows to hide file extensions, (Settings, Folder Options,
View, Hide File Extensions) you are more likely to get tricked by this.
If you have set OE to open images in the Preview Pane and OE doesn't
automatically display it then it's not a real image.

Michael : as far as possible, I like to know what is going on in my
computer, so I do not hide file extensions, or, indeed, files. I
don`t use the Preview Pane, though, just double-click the email or
post to open it, but assume your comments still apply. I didn`t know
about the Trojan Horse which masquerades as a jpg, so I shall watch
out for those extra file extensions. Thanks for warning me.

Robear : As I mentioned earlier, I do like to see the image in the
email (or post) so that I can tell if it`s worth saving to the HD. If
I do save it, I scan it with AVG before opening it, just in case.
Probably unnecessary, though, in light of what has been said before in
this thread. Thank you for your confirmation that "...the display of
the JPEG in a separate area below the message is not the equivalent of
opening the attachment...", which is very reassuring.

Yes, I have tried it, and it works using AVG v.7.5. Haven`t tried
with AVG v.8, as I uninstalled it when I found that version caused an
annoying problem with OE6 and newsgroups - even without email scanner
and link manager installed.
