can receive but can't send
 
I also have received the error message "The connection to the server has
failed. Account: 'pop.freeserve.com', Server: 'smtp.freeserve.com', Protocol:
SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number:
0x800CCC0E"

As Michael suggested I tried ports 587 and 465 but to no effect. Have
Wanadoo got a bug?

I can't ping that server either ...check with your provider as to whether
you have the proper smtp server (or if its down at the moment)

I just tried to use a Telnet session. I get a "Connect failed - Could not
open a connection to smtp.freeserve.com" error, using port 25.

There is no "Reference" header line in your post. If you already have a
thread going, it would be a big help to reply to the original thread
instead of starting a new one. I can't find any reference to Michael, or
why he would make such a suggestion.

My suggestion would be to contact Freeserve; they seem to be the ones with
a problem. Of course, they could just be non-responsive to "foreign" IP
address connections; "foreign" in this case meaning not a part of their
network.

You'd have to talk to Wanadoo to find out what they allow. Using ports
587 or 465 is a possible workaround when an ISP blocks external SMTP
servers. It doesn't work in all situations. Depends on how determined
the ISP is.

Actually, it depends more upon whether the remote mail service uses those
ports. I use 'smpt.mail.yahoo.co.jp'. Port 465 and port 587 don't work with
that server; not because my ISP blocks them outbound, but because they
aren't listening for traffic on those ports inbound.

There is no reason to block either port, and an ISP which does so (I know
of none which do) is wrong to do so. It won't have the same impact on spam
and viruses as blocking outbound port 25 does.
