Lost Outlook Icon and Files
Question
My IE7 was corrupted and getting the "cannot find (null)" error. I looked up the error in this community and uninstalled and downloaded/installed IE7 again as suggested . When I restarted the computer there was a new outlook exp. icon which when I clicked on it, would only open internet properties. I found a thread on how to restore the icon (msimn.exe) , but when I use the restored icon I get this error: "Outlook Express cannot be started. The application was unable to create the font cashe object (0x8007000E, 127)" Can anyone help me find the original program .exe, or were the files lost with the IE install? Thanks...gary |

Installing IE7 should not have installed or changed any Outlook Express
icon. The new icon you found sounds more like an IE icon. For the error you are getting, see: OLEXP: Font Cache Error (0x8007000E, 183) When You Start Outlook Express http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=232169 -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "phal" wrote in message ... Well, I had enough sense to use system restore and got my email back with
everything intact. Obviously the original files are around somewhere or they would be gone when I restored, I just cannot get to them. Again I got the (null) error, so I exported and saved everything in OE I cared about. I uninstalled IE7, reinstalled from Microsoft Update. After install, again my email program disappeared. My original icon is there this time, but again when I click on it, I get the internet properties window. I do not have the "Outlook Express cannot be started, application was unable to create the font cashe object (0x8007000E, 127)" error message because I did not try to restore the shortcut (msimn.exe). This time the icon was the same as my old one. but still, I have no files or application with my old icon. Apparrently the missing icon had nothing to do with my problem, I can use system restore again and get OE back. But if I do, I am sure I will get the (null) error along with. Then the IE7 uninstall reinstall will kill it again. I recently had a problem with a very nasty worm. I cleaned the worm after weeks of work and at that time the email was fine. I reinstalled my registered Pro version of Windows XP after cleaning and some little crap I was having problems with went away. I am still testing clean, but this could have something to do with the problem. I really hate to format after working for weeks removing the worm and finally getting everything working again Is it possible to download IE6 somewhere and try that? I also checked the properties of the OE icon on my desktop and the shortcut key has no target in it. If I had an idea where the original file I need to open was located, maybe I could restore? Thanks...gary "Michael Santovec" wrote: Installing IE7 should not have installed or changed any Outlook Express icon. The new icon you found sounds more like an IE icon. When you uninstall IE7, you should have IE6.
Does OE work when you have IE6? Did you do a repair install of XP or a complete install? Several programs included IE6. TurboTax did. -- Ronald Sommer "phal" wrote in message ... Hi Ron,
After the IE7 uninstall, no web pages would open. I am not uninstalled at this time so I cannot tell you what was returned by the computer when I tried. I did what was called an "upgrade" by XP when I did the install. The repair option was not available. Also, this was done with a "slipstreamed" XP SP3 version as all I possess is an original copy of xp pro. There has been some real quirky things go wrong with XP since I finally killed the worm, I may have to format to get rid of all the problems, but I am not looking forward to it. Thanks...gary "Ron Sommer" wrote: When you uninstall IE7, you should have IE6. Does OE work when you have IE6? Did you do a repair install of XP or a complete install? Several programs included IE6. I also looked in the program files/outlook express folder and msimn.exe is
not in the file. I guess if I do not have an executable, I wont be able to open. Any way of getting this back and deposting it in the OE folder? msimn is a hidden file. Are you showing hidden files?

I believe that an upgrade install just builds on the Registry.
