what happened to my contacts?

My contacts have disappeared from my OE panel.

I use Outlook and they are there, but no longer in OE?

But, OE still knows who I want to e-mail by completing the address for me...

Just wondering.

OK, thank-you.
I didn't think I had that many, but maybe I do!

Is the standard address book format in a *.wab ?

I tried exporting contacts from Outlook then into OE, but my first attempt
failed.

Outlook's contacts are stored inside its message store (.pst file).
Outlook Express uses the Windows Address Book to store its contacts.
Outlook and Outlook Express do not share contacts. They are stored in
different places.

Did you open the Windows Address Book to see if any contacts were
listed?

Did you decide to share contact info between Outlook's contacts and the
Windows Address Book? See:
http://www.slipstick.com/contacts/oeshare.htm
http://www.insideoe.com/files/wab.htm
In the Windows Address Book, is there a Tools - Options menu? If so,
what happens when you disable sharing?

By "OE panel", do you mean the Select Recipients dialog when composing a
new e-mail and clicking on the To, Cc, or Bcc button to show a list of
contacts (rather than opening the Windows Address Book)? If so, what
group of contacts is listed in the drop-down listbox just under the
"Type name or select from list" field? What do you see in that same
group when you open the Windows Address Book and look in there?

In the Windows Address Book application, use the Help - About menu. Is
a path listed to where is your .wab file? In that path, does the .wab
file exist in that path?

I've seen mention elsewhere of Bruce's suggestion to pare down the
contacts list to under 1000 (i.e., 999 max). I don't know if this
maximum is for the total number of contacts within the .wab file or
within each group you define within the Windows Address Book. If you
need to keep more than 999 contact records in the WAB, see if creating
more groups (to categorize your contacts) lets you have more than 999
total contacts listed inside the .wab file. In Windows Address Book,
select the node under which you want to create a new subgroup,
right-click and use New - Group (or use the File - New Group menu),
and create a new group. Then drag some of your contacts into that
group. Using groups is handy for organizing of your contacts but when
you export that .wab file they all get flattened into one group (i.e.,
the group organization is only internal inside that .wab file). When
you get to the "OE panel" next time, you'll have to use the drop-down
listbox to select from which group to list contacts. If slicing up your
more than 999 contacts into groups doesn't alleviate the problem of the
blank Select Recipients dialog in OE then you're stuck with having to
use multiple .wab files with OE.

Oddly couldn't find the Windows Address Book

The only files listed are dynamic link library files - *.dll; unless I
missed something here

I think I might want to take a peek at what happened to my address book. A
search might help...

Goodness gracious, it's in 6 different locations and counting:

Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book
1x
Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book
2x (one much larger than all the rest)
Documents and Settings\Default User\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book
1x
Documents and Settings\LogMeInRemoteUser\Application Data\Microsoft\Address
Book
1x
Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Application Data\Microsoft\Address
Book
1x

So - which one do I use :( ?

If you are seeing a bunch of DLL files listed, then you've opened the OE
Help, About and not the address book help..

In open the address book, and then it that, click Help, About Address
Book. It will list the path to the WAB file if any. If it is blank,
then OE is set to share the Outlook contacts. You can't import or
export the OE address book while that is set.

I said to open the Windows Address Book. That is a wholly separate
application than Outlook Express but is from where Outlook Express gets
the contact records. Outlook Express uses the contacts from the
Windows Address Book application, not from Outlook's .pst message store
file.

You should see a link to the WAB under your Start - Programs -
Accessories menu. If not, run the wab.exe application which is
normally under "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\wab.exe". There
should even be a toolbar button inside of OE to load the WAB
application.

wab.exe is included in the OE install but it is a separate application.
It opens .wab files. Within your user profile (Windows login), the
default location for your .wab file is specified in the registry under
the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Wab\WAB4\Wab File Name

Its normal path:

%userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\filename.wab

Oh, there it is!

Yep, they showed up.

But, I've gone ahead and shared between OE and Outlook, so, my panel filled
in before I could execute the wab.exe file.

It's a nice little application, Outlook Express. Was there an SDK
specifically for this, or not?
