Unfortunately, there is no way I could help as you suggest. I just have one
simple computer that is no better than yours except that everything is intact. I have no way to access your machine like a tech pro could. From what you just posted, you have a lot of folders in the wrong places. More than you should have. And folders in folders that should not be, unless I misinterpret you. I do have one, perhaps simple, thing for you to try. The store folders are the Outlook Express folders in Window Explorer. They all have a path similar to this: C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\A long string of numbers and letters\Microsoft\Outlook Express At the point where you get to Identities, you see a few, correct? Can you determine which one contains the dbx files that you are missing? IOW, Identities\Numbers & Letters\Microsoft\Outlook Express If you have determined which Outlook Express folder contains the dbx files you are missing, make note of it. Now, do you know which Outlook Express folder is the one for your current OE? It is the one with the same identity, (Numbers and letters), that you see in Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder in Outlook Express. ***Close OE.*** You MUST do this. Expand the folder tree in Windows Explorer so that you have your current OE's Outlook Express folder exposed, but do not open it. Expand the folder tree so that the Outlook Express folder that has your dbx files in it is exposed. Click on that OE folder and you should see your 100+ dbx files in the right hand pane. Right click on one to highlight it and then Ctrl+A will highlight them all. OK so far? Right click again and click Properties. Clear the Read Only attribute. OK out and make sure all the dbx files are still highlighted. Right click on the highlighted dbx files and drag them to the Outlook Express folder for the identity you have determined is the one you need the files in for your current OE identity and have already exposed by expanding the folder tree. When you see it turn blue, release the right mouse key and select Copy Here, not Move here. You may see a prompt asking if you want to overwrite. Click YES. Open OE. If you dragged the correct dbx files to the correct Outlook Express folder, they /should/ be back. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Should all this not correct the problem, I suggest you take the tower to a local and reputable computer doc. Preferably not something like Bust Buy's Geek Squad. Perhaps print out this thread for reference. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hopefully you get this resolved. In any case, there are two things you must do to both prevent this and be able to fix it easy in the future. 1: Back up OE daily to fix a problem like this in minutes. This freeware tool backs up everything in OE in seconds. Disregard what is written in red. That is referring to a different program. Outlook Express Quick Backup (OEQB): http://www.oehelp.com/OEBackup/Default.aspx 2: Don't let anyone touch your machine other than you. *Especially* if they are more computer savvy than you. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA "BKent1" wrote in message ... a.. b.. Tip #1: Assuming your 8 years worth of mail is worth $27 to you, purchase
DBXpress (http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx) | Close OE (IMPORTANT!) | Run DBXpress in "Extract from disk" mode | Recovered messages (if any) can be dragged into any folder in your new (and empty) identity. Tip #2: Take your machine to a local, reputable, and independent shop (i.e., not BigBoxStore USA or Geek Squad) and ask them to recover your database. Tip #3: Password-protect your User Account and don't let your son know the password. Good luck. General OE Caveats: - Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm - Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place. - Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause corruption (i.e., loss of messages) and provides no additional protection: Why you don't need your anti-virus to scan your email http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tuto...ning/index.htm -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ BKent1 wrote: My young son thought he could move the local folders file of OUTLOOK EXPRESS 6 (all my folders) into a new folder he creaed outside of Outlook express.
