Compacting takes about 30 minutes
Each compacting of messages in my OE (v. 6.00.2900.5512) turns into a
nightmare - it takes about 30 minutes, sometimes more. Is it right? There is "a few minutes" in the primary message! The file sizes is: Inbox.dbx - 475 Mb, Sent Item.dbx - 390 Mb. How can I fix this? Thanks Lev |
Compacting takes about 30 minutes
Start by doing some housecleaning. (Do you really need all those messages
saved?). 1: Do not archive mail in default OE folders, Inbox, Sent Items, etc., as they will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. 2: After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. 3: Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 For some programs, turning it off is not enough. You may have to uninstall it and reinstall in Custom Mode and opt out of e-mail scanning when offered. Note: The more often you compact, the less time it should take. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA "Levlg" wrote in message ... Start by (1) not using Sent Items or any other default folder (e.g., Inbox;
Deleted Items) to archive your messages and (2) compacting all folders manually & more frequently. General OE Caveats: - Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local folders created for this purpose. - Empty Deleted Items folder daily. - Frequently perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm - Do not cancel Automatic Compacting, should it occur, and do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if Automatic Compacting is taking place. - Disable email scanning by your anti-virus application. It can cause corruption (i.e., loss of messages) and provides no additional protection: Why you don't need your anti-virus to scan your email http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tuto...ning/index.htm -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ Levlg wrote: Each compacting of messages in my OE (v. 6.00.2900.5512) turns into a nightmare - it takes about 30 minutes, sometimes more. But at least the OP manages to compact the lot, despite the size.
FWIW it only takes my system a few minutes to compact a large folder. Maybe the OP has a slower chipset/older computer? You've got too many messages to compact.
The files are too big. Move messages into newly created folders and delete as much ash and trash as you can. -- DSH Lux et Veritas et Libertas Vires et Honor " [email protected] wrote in message ...
