I can't delete any e-mails from my inbox,. I tried doing it 3 ways but none
work andI do not get any error message. I tried deleting massages by clicking on a delete button, or right clicking on the mouse and click delete, or by clicking on the Edit and then select delete. However I can move these messages to other folders so I temporarily created a JUNK folder but still can't delete these messages from there. I would appreciate any tips on how to fiz this problem. I've been using this Outlook Express for the past five years but never ran into this problem. Thank you. Marianna |

You may have a corrupted mail folder. If you are lucky, it is the
Deleted Items folder, and not the folder you are trying to delete the messages from. For a corrupted Deleted Items folder: - Close Outlook Express. - OE5+: Locate the file Deleted Items.dbx in the mail directory and delete it. You can use Start, Find (or Search), Files or Folders, "Deleted Items.dbx" to find it. On Win2000 you need enable the display of Hidden or System files in the folder options and XP you need to use the advanced options to find Hidden or System files. (You can also determine the location by looking in OE at Tools, Options, Maintenance, Store Folder.) - Open Outlook Express again. It will create a new empty Deleted Items. This assumes that there is nothing in the Deleted Items folder that you need. If you do, instead of deleting the Deleted Items.dbx file (OE5+), rename it to something else, such as deleteold.dbx. Then use the following program to try and recover messages from it. http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Marianna" wrote in message ... Move any messages you want to save out of Deleted Items, Sent Items and the
Inbox to folders that you create and then close OE and delete the dbx files for those three folders. Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer or, copy and paste it into Start | Run. In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3, the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options Icon | View, or in Windows Explorer | Tools | Folder Options | View. With OE closed, find the Deleted Items.dbx, Sent Items.dbx and Inbox .dbx files and delete them. New files will be created automatically when you open OE. Compact all folders as described below. To help prevent this in the futu Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2 or SP3}. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express Imperial Beach, CA "Marianna" wrote in message ... Marianna I am not an expert but try this: Move all the messages out of the Deleted Items folder into another mail folder (as you did) Locate where the Outlook Express data files were on the hard drive. (You can do this by clicking Tools in the Outlook Express menubar and selecting Options. From the tabs on the Dialog box select Maintenance and click the Store Folder button) If you are using XP the Deleted Items.dbx file is a hidden file. You may need change your view settings to see hidden files. To do this: 1.. Click the Start button 2.. Click My Computer 3.. Click Tools 4.. Click Folder Options 5.. Click View 6.. Click the "Show hidden files and folders" option. 7.. Click Apply, then Okay You can now go to the store folder and delete the file "Deleted Items.dbx." Outlook Express will create a new one when it is restarted because it can't find the old one. Good Luck Noel |
