When logging into my Outlook Express 6 program this morning I received an
'error' message, so I exited and re-entered but now I 've lost all inbox messages received since 26-06-2008 and new messages are announced but do not appear in the log and the '2 new messages' message disappears after a minute or so. I've tried the obvious switch off and on again, and 'system restore' and a couple of tips from the Outlook Express Basic Repair Kit with no success. Can anyone please help? |

Any idea what the error message said? This perhaps?
Error Number: 0x800C0133 = a corrupt Inbox. Move any mail you still have to a local folder you create. Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store Folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer or, copy and paste it into Start | Run. In WinXP, Win2K & Win2K3 the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show Hidden Files and Folders under Start | Control Panel | Folder Options | View. With OE closed, rename the Inbox.dbx to Inboxold.dbx. A new Inbox will be created automatically when you open OE. Try to retrieve the lost messages from Inboxold.dbx with one of these tools. I recommend DBXpress. DBXtract: http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx DBXpress: {much faster for large files} http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx General precautions for Outlook Express: Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. Hi Bruce, I don't know how you did it, but I only got to transferring the
messages to 'inboxold' and all the messages reappeared in the new or original (?) inbox, including 30 new messages which I had not been able to access until then. Perhaps it was a warning that my folders were getting too large, so I will take your advice to keep them smaller in future. Thanks very much for your help, I've been trying since 12 noon and its now 5.15 pm GMT. Computers save a lot of time when they're working OK, but waste such a lot when they're not! DK.
