It won't work though. He cannot use the message store on another machine
without physically moving the complete set of DBX files and importing them,
whether by telling Outlook Express to use the copied files or by using OE
File/Import.

How then do you propose that he keep them current with each other? Either
leave a copy on the server and download to both machines or forget about it
since he does not want to spend time copying files. The info is not going
to "fly" with any type of pixie of magic dust between the machines, just
because he at one time copied over the same message store, i.e., it will
work for that one moment that is frozen in time, but that's it.

Now if you know of some other way it's going to work, share it with all of
us. He can either (1) use the method of leaving copies of all messages on
the server, or (2) use Briefcase or something similar to transfer info, or
(3) use a Transfer.dbx folder and copy Transfer.dbx between the machines to
overwrite the older one on the laptop.

The only reason I suggested cloning is his initial request was to have the
identities be the same.

Also, another trick that works for many is just to set both accounts to
leave a copy of messages on the server (deleting them after 'xx' days so
they don't accumulate) and then just download them to both machine on a

Regardless, with OEX he could point to the files on the one Identity and
import them without having to switch to the other Identity. But he might be
able to do that using File | Import as well.

But he won't be able to receive any messages from one ID unless he logs onto

of us. He can either (1) use the method of leaving copies of all
messages on the server, or (2) use Briefcase or something similar to
transfer info, or (3) use a Transfer.dbx folder and copy Transfer.dbx
between the machines to overwrite the older one on the laptop.

The only reason I suggested cloning is his initial request was to have
the identities be the same.

Jim,
Tiny only has the laptop.
When at work he connects using a domain and uses one Identity.
He uses another Identity when off the domain.
Transferring sent and received messages between the two Identities is
what Tiny is trying to eliminate.
Cloning the Identities will not solve the problem.
This would also mean that if he clones the domain Identity, then he
won't have access when off the domain.
And cloning the off domain Identity, will mean that he may not connect
when in the office.
Have the two Identities use the same message store is what Tiny needs.
Or he needs to have OE set to not make a connection and make the
connection before opening OE.

The only thing to remember is that any change to the primary account
will have to be copied/merged into the registry of the cloned machine
to keep everything happy. Other than that, it works quite well. Good
luck.

Also, another trick that works for many is just to set both accounts
to leave a copy of messages on the server (deleting them after 'xx'
days so they don't accumulate) and then just download them to both
machine on a regular basis. (Tools/Accounts - Mail tab, double click
the desired account, look on the Advanced tab at the bottom of the
page.)

Well, cloning (same identity on two machines) is not that difficult.
Did you even read how to do it at the website I posted? There are
only 4 keys involved that need to exported. If you're unwilling to
do it, then I don't know of another way that would work.

thanks Jim but I am only using the laptop I don't use A desktop
machine as well I have tried using a file to transfer the messages
to but it doesn't work that well.
I have to keep transferring messages back & forth constantly as I
can be connected to the domain for 2hrs in the morning then go on
site then back on the domain
so I have to keep transferring messages both ways 3 or 4 times a
day.
What I need to do is be able to use the same identity when I am
connected to the domain or standalone on site ,most of my messages
are cad drawings or pictures which I need to be able to access all
the time for working on & sending back to clients

The only way to do that is to make the laptop a "clone" of the
Desktop machine. For how to clone Outlook Express on two
machines, see the info at this link:
http://www.insideoe.com/backup/bu_full.htm

And, any changes to the Desktop setup, such as adding/deleting
local folders, or adding/deleting a newsgroup subscription will
require a "Re-cloning" of the laptop. It's not too much work but
it can become a PITA trying to keep two machines in sync. Do you
really have to do this? Why not just copy the desired messages to
a Transfer folder for this purpose? If you want to try that, see
the info in the last paragraph at this link for details:
