... Hi, in my overview of messages I see different messages with an attachment, but when I select them to see them in my preview pane the paperclip icon in the upper right corner of the message header is not there... -- Filip Hi Filip, I only have one email that came with an attachment. In the list of messages in the top overview pane, there is a paperclip to the left of the item. In the preview pane below, there is NO paperclip in the upper right because my anti-virus eliminated the attachment, which contained "virus Win32/Swen.A worm". (It purported to be an update from Microsoft, on the same day of the month that Microsoft releases updates. Very sneaky! Microsoft does NOT send update files by email.) That is one reason why an email would not show a paperclip in the preview pane. The Overview pane sees that an attachment is indicated in the header and shows the paperclip to the left. The Preview pane does not see a valid attachment, so it does not show a paperclip in the upper right. Another possibility in OE is this menu item: Tools Options Security (tab)[*] Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus. Having that item checked would block any form of executable files. In your later messages you gave an example of one attachment with a ".pps" file extension. I'm not familiar with Power Point Show files, as to whether they can write to disk files. The new ".ppsm" extension is a macro enabled file type, so potentially could contain a macro virus. I'm not sure if OE makes its own determination of what file types could potentially be unsafe, or whether it relies on the security settings in Internet Explorer. Did you recently upgrade to a new IE version when the paperclips vanished? (There was a cumulative security update for Internet Explorer versions 6, 7, 8 earlier in June 2009.) OE uses IE for rendering the html in email messages, and IE uses OE for saving and displaying MHT (MIME encoded versions of HTML web pages) files. There are probably other interconnections between the two. For test purposes, I have attached a "Have a nice day" text file to this message. While this message is still in the Drafts folder, the big paperclip is displaying in the Preview pane. I clicked the paperclip and can either open "Test01.txt (84 bytes)" or "Save Attachments". I opened it, and while open, did a file search for "Test01.txt", with these results: 1. A "Test01.txt" shortcut in the "Recent" documents folder 2. The original file: C:\Attach\Test01.txt 3. The opened file in folder: "My Computer" (In the History\Today area) That third file in Search Results has the Internet Explorer generic "e" icon, so that indicates there is some connection with Internet Explorer when opening attachments in Outlook Express. Have you tried sending yourself an email with a plain text attachment? FWIW. --Richard |

Was Outlook Express active when the update(s) were being installed? After my reply to you, I noticed in the Overview window, that your message that I replied to was not marked with the purple arrow "Replied To" icon. Older messages still have the purple arrow icon. Your Outlook Express version is apparently 6.00.2900.3138 (SP2?), while my OE version is 6.00.2900.5512 (XP-pro SP3). Maybe my purple arrows and your paperclips will return after the July update. (I'm not holding my breath. ![]() This was the June 2009 update: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP (KB969897) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/969897 Did you also get this older update awhile back? Do the same with Show preview pane header. Exit that dialog. Press F5 key to Refresh. Since the paperclip icon in the Preview pane is also a button that allows opening or saving attachments, your security settings can affect it. Besides the OE ToolsOptionsSecurity item mentioned in my previous message above, you might want to check this also: Tools Options Security (tab) Select the Internet Explorer security zone to use: o Internet zone (Less secure, but more functional) * Restricted sites zone (More secure) [*] Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus. Mine is set for Restricted zone and Do not allow. I just attached a test EXE file, (C:\Windows\hh.exe,) to a reply and the paperclip was still in the Preview pane, but when I clicked the paperclip, the open and save items were grayed out. I opened the reply from the Overview pane and right clicked the attachment and the "Save As" and "Save All" were grayed out, the "Open" was not, so I clicked it and got this Windows Security Warning: | Windows found that this file is potentially harmful. | To help protect your computer, Windows has blocked access to this file. | Name: hh.exe I un-checked the "Do not allow attachments..." item, and the paperclip menu was still grayed out. I pressed F5 to Refresh, and it was no longer grayed out. I re-checked the above item and refreshed and then removed the EXE and attached a PPS file, and the menu items were not grayed out, so apparently that file type is not a security risk. None of that explains why you do not have a preview paperclip though. You might try un-installing the KB969897 update: In Control Panel Add or Remove Programs At top, put checkmark in "Show updates" box to see: Security Update for Windows XP (KB969897) click Remove, restart computer, and see if the paperclip is back. Then manually download the update (see KB article link above, "skip details",) and then with both IE and OE closed, manually install the update and restart computer. FWIW. --Richard Hi Richard, we have IE 6 here and all the latest security updates are installed, the paperclip indeed vanished after such an update. I can indeed see the paperclip from your textfile in the overview but not in the preview pane header. No matter what extension it is, htm, txt, doc, etc... there is never ever a paperclip in this header. If I open the mail or message I see the attachment and I can open it without any trouble, it's only the paperclip in the header that I miss. No big issue but as we say here, it feels like getting a yummie piece of cake, take a bite and then being forced to give it back.... I indeed tried to send myself a couple of mails with different attachments, but same trouble... Hi Filip, Odd things that happen after updates don't affect all systems the same way. ![]() This was the June 2009 update: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP (KB969897)http://support.microsoft.com/kb/969897 Did you also get this older update awhile back? Do the same with Show preview pane header. Exit that dialog. Press F5 key to Refresh. Since the paperclip icon in the Preview pane is also a button that allows opening or saving attachments, your security settings can affect it. Besides the OE ToolsOptionsSecurity item mentioned in my previous message above, you might want to check this also: Tools Options Security (tab) Select the Internet Explorer security zone to use: *o *Internet zone (Less secure, but more functional) ** *Restricted sites zone (More secure) [*] Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus. If none of that helps, at least you have ruled out one possibility. Please reply back here if you discover a cure.
