Import Messages from backup?
After a HDD failure, I have replaced the drive and am in the process of
reinstalling programs... Problem... OE 6 will not recognize messages in backup location.. repeatedly tried 'import' no success... read MS articles on manual import... manually moved all files to folder where messages are stored.. no recognition... also tried dragging directly to folders in OE 6 but when I do that a 'new message' screen pops up with an attachment of the file I am trying to import... Identity issue? Both the current copy of OE and the previous one are version 6... Baffled in Ohio |

You can't import if Folders.dbx was not included in the backup. Wherever you
have the unrecognizable dbx files right now, drag them to the Desktop and then try the following. Do one folder at a time. Open OE and create a folder with the *exact* same name as the one on the Desktop. Open the new folder and then close OE. (You must do this). Go to Windows Explorer and locate the Message Store folder for your OE identity, but don't open it. Click on the Desktop and drag the file from the Desktop in the right hand pane to the OE store folder in the left pane. Prompt - "Do you want to overwrite......."? Click Yes. *Note* If you have moved the Outlook Express store folder from it's default location on drive C to another drive, drag the dbx file to a location on that drive and not the Desktop. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP [Mail] Imperial Beach, CA "Carmen Byler" wrote in message .. . I tried this with several folders and it did not work. An empty folder with
the same name was in the folder list. Any other suggestions? thank. "Bruce Hagen" wrote: You can't import if Folders.dbx was not included in the backup. Are you the OP?
What are the sizes of the ex-bak, now dbx files? Did you create a folder in OE with the exact same name, (sans the .dbx)? Did you open this folder and then close OE before dragging the dbx file into the message store? Will not work if you didn't. The only option left is DBXpress, possibly run in Extract From Disk mode, to maybe retrieve the messages.
