You can also restore the bak file and import it under a different name using
the method to import individual dbx files (www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#imp1) and just rename the bak file the dbx filename. If that fails to restore the messages then the only shot you have is the extract from disk feature of DBXpress. steve "Bobby" wrote in message ... Hi
Thanks for all your help so far. I have manged to restore some of teh bak files into OE - but these were deleted on 14 July - so I have the emails up until then, but that still leaves me with almost 2 months of missing emails. Is there much hope of recovering other emails that may be lurking on my system somewhere? Has anyone used the DBXpress software - is this reliable? Thx Bobby "Bruce Hagen" wrote: All e-mail items may be missing when you start Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918069 To restore a bak folder to the message store folder, first locate the Message Store in Windows Explorer. Close OE, then Start | Run | Ctrl+V will put the location in the box - Click OK and you'll see the OE files. Otherwise, write the location down and navigate to it in Windows Explorer. In WinXP, the dbx files are by default marked as hidden. Eg: If the file is Saved.bak, the new folder should be named Saved. Open the new folder and then close OE. If the folder is there, but just empty, continue on to the next step. First, check if there is a bak file already in the message store. If there is, and you removed the dbx file, go ahead and rename it to dbx. If it isn't already in the message store, open the Recycle bin and right click on the bak file for the folder in question and click Restore. Open the message store back up and change the file extension from .bak to .dbx. Close the message store and open OE. The messages should now be back in the folder. For the messages, you might check first the Recycle bin for bak files that are backups of the dbx files that you may be able to restore (see www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#2). Otherwise, I think your only shot is the extract from disk feature of DBXpress (www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/) which will bypass the file system and analyze the all the disk clusters on the drive and if the messages are still there, it will recover them. But there is no way of knowing if they are there without running the program. steve "Bobby" wrote in message ... There are no signs of any other dbx files on the system. There is no way of knowing how successful DBXpress will be without running
the program, as there is no way of knowing if disk clusters that contained the messages at one point have been overwritten or not. Its the only program that has this feature, and I worked very hard on it to get it working, but if the disk clusters got overwritten, then nothing (short of the GOVT and / or $$$$$$$$) can recover the messages. steve "Bobby" wrote in message ... Hi Thanks for all your help so far. Minimize the Message Store. Open OE and, if the folder is missing, create a folder with the *exact* same name as the bak file you want to restore but without the .bak. Hi Steve,
I had a friend with a similar problem and I was able to find the missing dbx files and re-import them. I'm just curious. What could have caused something like this in the first place. The user of the computer is not at all PC-literate, but he swears he didn't do anything different and nothing unusual happened just before his messages disappeared. I also found a whole mess of *.bak files in his recycle bin that match the original *.dbx files in size and date. Any ideas? Like I said, I'm just curious. Thanks. Any ideas?
