OE Compacting problem
Specific problem:
In the last couple of weeks, Outlook Express has a pop-up every couple of minutes that tells me I can save space if I compact the folders. I clicked ok once. My inbox got deleted. I was able to restore it but the messge keeps coming back. It is popping up on both my home and office computer. I have Nero Starsmart on Home computer but not the office computer IE version 7 OE version 6 full Windows version WinXP SP3 Windows (Desktop) Search is not installed. |

...I have Nero Starsmart on Home computer but not the office computer And are you encountering this behavior on both computers or just the one with the Nero app installed? Does the compact prompt appear when OE isn't open? I clicked ok once. My inbox got deleted. That's due to something else, not that compacting itself. Did you only install SP3 a couple of weeks ago? For reference, here's a list of items known to cause this behavior (which is NOT being seen by the vast majority of OE users) in "most often seen" order: • Nero plug-in(s) including Nero Scout*; • Windows (Desktop) Search is installed [FIX: Uninstall the application or CONTROL PANEL | INDEXING OPTIONS | MODIFY | Clear the check box for Outlook Express files (i.e., EML, NWS, & DBX files)]; • IBM Rapid Access keyboard (driver) RAKDLL.DLL; • Various & sundry anti-virus applications (including Norton); • Various & sundry anti-spyware applications; • Various & sundry third-party firewalls; • Any/all of the above running when WinXP SP3 was installed; • Disk defragmentation, need for; • Using Visual Basic DoCmd.SendObject command to create an email; • Using any number third-party applications (e.g., accounting software; FileMaker 6) to send emails by via Outlook Express; • MailWasher; and/or • Programatically opening EML files while OE is closed (e.g., creating a New Message via Address Book). =============== * IN RE Nero Scout, see Item 2.3 on page 8 he ftp://ftp6.nero.com/user_guides/nero...oScout_Enu.pdf Also see http://www.nero.com/eng/support-faq.html?s=sub&t=Scout -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Client - since 2002 www.banthecheck.com Stephen wrote: Specific problem: In the last couple of weeks, Outlook Express has a pop-up every couple of minutes that tells me I can save space if I compact the folders. I clicked ok once. My inbox got deleted. Next time, before clicking Ok, open Task Manager at its Applications tab and find the list item which corresponds to that prompt window. Then right-click Go To Process. If the Image name is not msimn.exe and if you already have msimn.exe running I would click on Cancel, not Ok. The best time to click on Ok IMO is just after you have closed OE and the Go To Process procedure finds that the prompt is coming from msimn.exe as it is closing. However, if you can remember to, just before closing OE, setting Work Offline (Alt-F,W), going back to the root node (Ctrl-y,Home,Enter) and doing Compact All Folders (Alt-F,F,F) would accomplish the same thing without another prompt. FYI Robert Aldwinckle --- I was able to restore it but the messge keeps coming back. It is popping up on both my home and office computer.
