I should have mentioned that the attachment had a wps file designation. To
open it, I got a message which said that I needed a converter and that I
should insert my MS Office XP Standard for Students and Teachers. I did so,
and the unreadable attachment was the result. I have Outlook Express 6.
Thank you all for responding.

Tom,

The ".wps" extension usually indicates that the file was written with
Microsoft Works, an uncommon product nowadays.

Microsoft offers a converter for certain versions of Works and certain
versions of Word:
http://www.microsoft.com/DOWNLOADS/d...displaylang=en

If you only have to convert one file once, and the data is not
sensitive, it might be simpler to locate a free conversion service on
the internet, e.g., http://www.zamzar.com/

HTH.
