Ah, so this is the route of my problem!! So if i install office 97 on
my windows xp computer I can still add email services?

Office 97 will work on XP just fine just as it is, except for the inclusion
of the Internet Mail Enhancement patch. Make sure you apply the latest
patches.

Right then tomorrow I'll download these patches and then I'll be able to use
my "old" Outlook97 with XP to send/receive emails? Wish me luck and expect
more postings if it doesn't work!

I always thought that to add an email service you had to add "windows
messaging" and use this. Looking at my Outlook 97 the only other
option that I have is Microsoft Mail. Is this the service that I
should be using to send/receive emails?

You have to install the "Enhancement Patch" [1] for Outlook 97. This
patch is included in SR1 for Outlook 97 [2]. After you have installed
SR1 you should also install SR2 for Outlook 97 [3].

Again, I'll caution you. Outlook 97 does not support SMTP server
authentication and many (most?) ISPs these days require that you
authenticate to the SMTP server when you send messages. For those ISPs,
Outlook 97 is not suitable for sending mail.
