Problems migrating PST files from Outlook 2000 to 2003

One of the users I support bought a new laptop with Office2003 on it.
Her old machine had all the mail in 2 PST files (outlook.pst and
archive.pst.) After setting up her mail (Internet mail for her home
office,) I copied over the pst files. I closed outlook and set up the
personal folders from the mail icon in the control panel. I selected
the folder type as outlook 97~2002.

When I open outlook, I can see the folders within the personal folders
but not the mail. I tried the inbox repair tool but it didn't help.
This is the first time I've worked with Outlook2003 and frankly I'm stumped.

Anybody have any ideas? The user is beginning to think I'm stupid and
I'm more than frustrated with it. The articles in the MS KB didn't help
me at all other than prove to the user I was doing it by the book.

Explain more clearly what you did.
What do you mean you "copied over" the pst files?
At no point would you ever have needed to select the PST file type.
Nothing is any different in Outlook 2003. You just open PST files with
Outlook's File Open command. The type of PST file was set when the file
was created, and you aren't creating new PST files--you're opening existing
ones.

Copied them where?

Exactly what did you click? It sounds like you created a new PSt instead of
linking to the existing PST.

Open Outlook. CLick FileOpenOutloko Data File, browse to the PST you
moved, select it, and click OK. it should now open and you should be able
to see everything. Drag-and-drop top the new PST that was created when you
installed OL 2K3.

I copied them to my documents in the users profile. I'll get with the
user and try your suggestion. I'm sure I've done it that way in past
but I most of the people I support are not using Microsoft mail programs.

The funny thing is that I did this exactly as describe in a MS knowledge
base article.

Thanx again.

Doesn't sound like you did.
The Help Files tell you how to do this, not the KB:

The article in the KB said pretty much the same thing but in plainer
English.

Odd.
Just wondering how you ever got lead down a path that required you to create
a new PST file.
