you need a POTS (plain old telephone) line to use fax or the dialer for
phone calls, unless your broadband supports voice and fax, in which case you
need drivers or equipment from the broadband provider to enable it.

Assuming your broadband is not via BT you need a std modem to connect to the
phone line.
You PC may have a modem fitted if so simply connect to bt line and set up
the new connection.
