Problems with email collection in Outlook 2003
A colleague's computer is not collecting emails from her ISP (TalkTalk in
the UK, if it's relevant). She has an old laptop running Outlook 2000, which is set to leave messages on the server. When she picks up messages from the old laptop, she gets all the emails, but if she does the same with the new laptop, she gets nothing. We've tried leaving the old laptop switched off and sending test messages to this email account, but it's not being picked up, even though it shows up on the ISP's webmail account and www.mail2web.com. We tried deleting the account information and recreating it, and the 'Test Settings' option worked fine. We were able to collect all the outstanding emails, but after a couple of hours it stopped collecting them again, so we're back to square one. My thinking is that the only option now is to uninstall Outlook and start over, but I'm not sure whether this will actually remove the relevant files from the computer. Is this a known issue, and does anyone have any suggestions as to what I might try next? Thanks in advance. |

Hi Diane,
Apologies for the delayed response to your very helpful post - I needed to wait until I got my hands on the laptop. I did as you suggested and deleted the old profile before creating a new one, but the problem repeated - it was fine on the first run, when it happily collected all the emails it has been missing for the past few days, but when we manually did a send/receive 5 minutes later, it failed to pickup the test messages we'd sent in the interim. I do wonder whether I'm going to have to dig out the Dell restore CDs... does it stop working or stop working until you reboot? if a reboot fixes it, how often are you checking for new mail? Set it for at least 10 min. Uninstall won't work and usually isn't necessary - detect and repair will do the same thing with less effort. You need to delete the profile and start over with a fresh profile. Another option is to create a new windows profile (in xp or 2000) - if it works in the new profile, then it's a setting in your windows profile. Delete the outlook profile and outlook registry keys, plus files at C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook and C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook and detect and repair.
