Set up separate contacts for each one. You could cross reference each of
them like "John Smith & Jane Doe" on one and "Jane Doe & John Smith" on the
other.

Do yourself a favor, put them in separately under their individual
names. Many a times i've had to look through my list trying to
remember who xxxxx was married to and what her new last name is.

One other trick is to put an entry for Mary Smith under her maiden
name with a note to look unde her married name.

Right. And then use a category that is their family name so they'll collect
together when viewing contacts by bategory. You can also link the two
contacts together with the Contacts field at the bottom left of the contact
form.
