Compacted messages now gone

I apologize if this has been asked before, but I wasn't sure where to
turn. I was prompted to compact my e-mail folders and save wasted
space (which I have done before), but this time, it seems to have
gotten rid of all of my e-mails in my mail folders. Is there any way
to get to those messages again or are they gone (stored) forever?

Is this with Outlook or Outlook Express? Outlook never prompts you to compact your folders so I suspect it is Outlook Express (check Help-About to verify)

Try posting this in an Outlook Express news group - this is not one of them.
Outlook is a part of Microsoft Office and is what this group supports.
Outlook Express is a part of Internet Explorer and has its own news groups.

You can also find some good Outlook Express information he

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. All
unsolicited mail sent to my personal account will be deleted without
reading.

After furious head scratching, auntof3 asked:
