Desperate for help with Outlook 2003 (mail to hyperlink opens mutiple browsers)
Hi,
Well its Outlook that would manage the MailTo protocol, being your default email program, therefore can I suggest first off to put in your Office 2003 CD and follow the installer that is poping up - it may be trying to fix this problem. You may also need your XP CD. Let us know what the installer is trying to do. O "Frustrated" wrote in message oups.com... I'm really desperate for a fix here. I'm running WinXP Pro SP2, IE6. I upgraded from from Office XP to Office 2003. When I did, two things happened. The Windows Installer box keeps popping up everytime a new mail message comes in. (Sometimes it pops up for no reason). I tried a Windows Installer cleanup utilitiy, but it didn't work. I ended up having to reload Office 2003, same prob. (Ive since tried repairing and reloading it several times) The REAL problem is that my e-mail works fine, but my wifes (same computer, both of us are administrators) can't e-mail hyperlinks in webpages. She can send and receive fine, but if she clicks on a mailto hyperlink on a webpage, it hangs, then proceeds to open 60 web browsers before I finally have to shut the whole program down. I found out that the "URL: MailTo Protocol" is missing in the file types section of Windows Explorer, but it is not missing on my side of the computer. (Again, my e-mail works fine) I tried fooling with the registry, but that's about as deep as my knowledge of software wants to go. I can't seem to manually add that protocol to the file types. I've got about 12 hours into this already. My wife is sharpening the steak knives.. Someone please HELP! I'd be forever grateful. |

It sounds to me that your browser has been hijacked.
1. Download hijackthis from http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ 2. Install hijackthis on your C: drive. 3. Open the program and click on Do a system scan and save a logfile 4. Save the logfile. 5. Visit http://www.hijackthis.de/ 6. Either copy and paste your logfile contents into the space provided, or Click on the Browse button and locate your logfile. 7. Click on Analyze 8. Wait a few minutes and the results will be displayed in your browser. 9. Follow the instructions for the "Nasty" entries. Be careful, not all "unknown" entries are truly bad guys. Good luck.
