OL2003 only partially recognizes contacts - can't resolve any names
 

I upgraded to Outlook 2003 on a new machine, and copied my PST file from
OL2000 over. Then I removed the default PST file Outlook created and when I
launched Outlook, it prompted me to fine the PST file. I have always used
this method, which I read on google, to point OL to my data store.

I set up OL2003 so that I can send mail from home. I'm not using Exchange,
just a POP account. Emailing works fine.

MY PROBLEM is: I can see all of my contacts, but when I type in names in the
"To:" box, none of them resolve. When I start typing in a name that I know
is in the Contacts list, then Ctrl + K, I get prompted with a blank dialog.
When I click "Show More Names...", I get a message "The address list could
not be displayed. The Contacts list associated with this address list could
not be opened. It may have been moved or deleted, or you do not have
permissions..."

? Can someone please help me get access to my contacts? I can edit them in
the Contacts area. All of my appointments work too. Just not the contacts.

This as an opaque post that conveys none of the information needed to solve
your problem. When you say you "copied my PST file over" that tells us
nothing about how you configured your new installation to use your previous
PST file. Your symptoms suggest that even though you may have migrated your
PST file correctly, you failed to reconfigure your Outlook Address Book to
use this PST file. Did you reconfigure the Outlook Address Book Service
after you changed PST files? You must.

To add, the OL2k pst you are using has a size limitation which an OL2003
unicode pst does not, and I believe is more efficient/robust.

Hmmm I thought I was very specific.

When I say "copy file over" I mean a simple copy to clipboard / paste onto
new machine and then hook up using the very commonly posted method I posted
here that I got off google.

Just out of curiosity, what else could "copied my PST file from OL2000
over", within the context of setting up a new machine, mean? I don't mean to
sound argumentative, but I am genuinely curious as to the "opacity" of that
statement.

I don't know how this worked, but I simply added a new entry in OL2003 and
that seemed to "jumpstart" the name resolution in my emails.

Now it's working as it should..

You did not post the method by which you "hooked up" this PST file to your
profile. Even had you done that correctly, it would not have established the
connection between that PST file and the Outlook Address Book service in
your profile.

To add, apparently the method is common.

According to google groups (MS outlook forums), the trick is to to remove
the original pst file created by OL and then and when Outlook prompts me to
locate the PST file, you simply point it to the PST file you want. While
Outlook Express explicitly allows you to set a data store directory
location, Outlook does not.

Also, I posted that I am using a POP account. Very easy to set up. Is there
anything else to setting up a POP account other than setting up an incoming
and outgoing mail server, username and password, etc? AFAIK, that's all
there is to setting up a POP account with minor exceptions.

What am I missing here in your claim? I'm reading it again and I do believe
that an Outlook user who was migrating a PST file from OL2000 to OL2003
would know exactly what I was talking about.

In any case, I must have done it right, because it works now as a result of
my having added a new contact using OL2003.

Nothing was apparent in your post and no that is not the correct method. The
correct method is to open the PST file in Outlook and designate it as the
default delivery location. Then restart Outlook and close the original PST
file that Outlook created.
After that, you still must designate your Contacts Folder(s) as email
address books for them to appear in the Address Book view.
