Default Can't close PST files

Bob Provencher, you wrote on Tue, 3 Jul 2007 08:10:31 -0400:

Thanks, that's the sort of help I am looking for... no thanks to the
so-called MVP's. I'll take a look at your tool. If not, I'll create a new
profile and migrate my settings over.

I am quite sure the tool will repair the profile and solves the issue
:-)

Hi Bob,

this is what I ment with:

You could also try our freeware tool "Public Fix profile":
http://www.publicshareware.com/outlo...x-profile.html

This tool has a backup function for the registry, so if you "delete" the
wrong entries with the tool, you can "import the old backup registry keys.

Maybe it helps.

Thanks! Creating a new profile was something I considered, but was hoping
to avoid. I'm looking for a tool that can make repairs to profiles so
that may be the ticket.

Editing the registry should only be a last resort. A new profile is better
because problems like this often indicate other problems with the old
profile.

Try this:

1. Quit Outlook
2. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
3. Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Messaging
Subsystem\Profiles\Microsoft Outlook Internet Settings\
4. Locate the registry key that contains the old personal folders entry,
right-click the key in the right pane, and then click Delete.
5. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart Outlook.

Not without knowing how you managed to do this. "Recently an error
occurred" is completely opaque and tells us nothing. Feel free to provide
some actual information.

Recently an error occurred where I was unable to close a PST file...
when I tried it I receive "the operation failed. an object could not be
found." I can't expand the folder either. Now I am receiving this on
another folder that I can expand. I am afraid that once I open a PST I
will no longer be able to close them... does anyone know how to solve
this?

The more information we have, the more accurate we can be in trying to solve
the problem. Since we have no information, just create a new profile from
scratch. Make sure you keep track of the name and location of the PST
file(s) you need to use.

Hi. I'm not sure what you mean. As far as I know I didn't do anything to
cause it. When I said an error occurred the first indication was the
message I got. As an MVP, feel free to provide some actual help.

You had all the information I had. Sometimes you have to deduce a problem
from forensic evidence. In this case since I see that these types of
profile issues are pretty common, I'm not really sure how what led to it is
relevant, as the solutions never mention it.

Fortunately the other user's suggestions cleaned up the problem.

Since Outlook does not do this all by itself for no reason, the steps that
lead up to the problem would have been helpful to provide a more specific
solution for you and to help you avoid the problem again.
Creating a new profile is a sledgehammer approach that fixes a whole host of
problems but leaves you having to recreate a lot of settings. It's nice not
to have to do it if you don't have to.

Actually, while checking through the kb, msdn and this newsgroup it appears
that Outlook does indeed get into an inconstent state by itself for no
apparent reason quite frequently. It stores a lot of state in the registry,
since that is not transacted I can see why it get's itself into out of sync
quite frequently. If it didn't there wouldn't be much use for all of the
profile and registry fixer upper tools that people come up with to solve
it's problems. They don't seem to need to know how it happened.

take 30 seconds... very cool.
