Must reboot before using Outlook Express
 
OE6 on WinXP Home

My wife uses OE6 from a WinXP machine connecting to the net
via a Netgear wireless router. The machine has four user
accounts on it - one for her, me, and our two kids. When she
goes to check her email, she logs into her account, then starts
OE. Every time she does this, she gets the error:

The connection to the server has failed. Account: "pop.bizmail.
yahoo.com", Server: "pop.bizmail.yahoo.com" Protocol: POP3, Port
110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x8000CCC0E

The same error occurs (except for referring to SMTP) when trying
to send mail.

If she reboots the PC, then logs in and starts OE, everything
works fine. This can be reproduced every time. No reboot - she
gets the error. Reboot first - it works fine.

When the error is occuring, she can still access the internet,
so a wireless disconnect isn't happening. She has also tried the
"Repair" option on the wireless connection, but even after doing
that, the error occurs. A reboot is the only thing that allows
OE to send and receive mail.

She is the only one who uses this machine for mail. I do my email
from my work machine.

Any ideas on what's wrong and how to fix?

Must reboot before using Outlook Express
 
Make sure you're not scanning incoming and outgoing mail with a virus
scanner. You may need to uninstall and reinstall the AV without the option
to make it truly stop.

Please note that Outlook Express is part of Internet Explorer. For OE help
post in the OE newsgroup:

Why would email scanning cause the error, but rebooting fix

Must reboot before using Outlook Express
 
Norton is known to cause this problem with e-mail scanning enabled. It
doesn't happen to everyone but it does happen to some.

When you switch accounts, Norton goes through a reconfiguration routine
for the new account. Sometimes it gets confused. The reboot cleans
things up.

Somewhat off-topic, but I just heard today that there are big problems with
Norton 2006-series of products that can allow malicious code to run, even
through the firewall.

For many reasons, we have advised against using Norton or McAfee programs
for quite some time now. I have had one computer that came with a free trial
of Norton, and another with McAfee. In both cases I removed those programs
before I did anything else.

I don't know if those programs cause any problems with MS Outlook, but they
continue to cause problems with Windows mail.

My canned reply for the die-hards:

I would suggest either Avast, (freeware), or NOD32, (not free).

In the case of Avast, choose Custom Installation and under Resident
Protection, uncheck: Internet Mail and Outlook/Exchange.

Norton, and McAfee, products are not Outlook Express friendly, and I don't
know of any OE-MVP that would recommend using them.

Regardless of the AV program, e-mail scanning should /never/ be used with
OE.

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no
protection not provided by the regular resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Outlook Express and
should be uninstalled.

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude
EML files from the scan. It provides no

Norton is *not compatible* with OE? You advise me to uninstall
my virus software and firewall? This seems a little drastic!
I will certainly see what happens when I disable email scanning,
but I'm not leaving the machine exposed to the net.
