Default Can't Import .pst file

I had to have my laptop repaired. It was suggested that I back up everything
before sending it in. So I did. I am now trying to reinstall all the
programs and data that was erased during the repair.
I backed up my Outlook (before repair) using the Import/Export in Outlook
and saved it on DVD. I have been trying to restore the data but it wont let
me. If I try to Import from the DVD I get the message: "File access Denied:
You don't have the permission required to access the file D:\Outlook.pst."
Okay. Than I tried moving the file off of the DVD into my Documents folder
on my HD and tried again. Now I get the message: "The File
c:\Users\username\Documents\Outlook.pst is not compatible with this version
of the Personal Folders information service. Contact your administrator".
How can I restore may data? Nothing seems to be working.

Exporting and importing are never the correct way to transfer Outlook data.
They are a good way to corrupt or lose data, which I suspect you have done.
The only way to transfer Outlook data is simply to make a copy of your
Outlook data file. Do you have a valid backup or copy of your Outlook data
file?

No I don't. I thought backing my data up using the Import/Export was
sufficient. I haven't had problems in the past.
Stupid HP reformatted my harddrive to replace the motherboard. I backed up
everything and have restored everything except Outlook.

Clarify the versions of Outlook that are involved here.

Doesn't fit. What you did would not result in that error message. There must
be more to this story.

The other thing that bothers me about this, in addition to Russ' and DL's
comments, is that Outlook 2002 doesn't work properly on Vista, so when you
say you have no problems before the drive was reformatted and that you were
using Vista and OL 2002 together, something just doesn't seem right.

I never knew Office 2002 and Vista didn't work together. I have had
absolutely no problems with compatiblity.
I don't have any other installation disks other the the OfficeXP so I
couldn't have ever installed anything newer. Like I
said my laptop did have the trial version of Office 2007 but I never used it
or opened. I uninstalled before installing OfficeXP.

Interesting. For most people (and I think it's documented in the KB),
Outlook won't remember account passwords because that relies on Protected
Storage Subsystem registry keys that Vista doesn't have.
