At the start of my Contacts list is a tiny table containing a blank row,
and a row saying "Other: 399".

This seems to be some sort of summary, so how do I populate this table?

I have all sorts of contacts in there, Friends, Family, Neighbours, Work
colleagues, musicians, composers, extra-terrestrials.

Is there a plus sign to the left of it?

No, one blank row, one row with two columns containing "Others:" and "399"

Strangely, the status bar at the bottom says "307" items, so 399 seems
to be counting something that some entries have more than one of, and
the "Categories" attribute seems about right.

Perhaps that box lists just a subset of the defined categories, and not
any of the one's I've used?

Aha! It is some sort of mostly blank contact, probably caused by
replicating with some dodgy device or other (cellphone?).

I stumbled on this by looking for a context menu, and realising that it
was identical to the "Contact" context menu.

I deleted it, and all is now well. Thanks for prodding me in the right
direction!

You were looking at a grouped view. Turn on the Group By Box and see which
field it was grouped by. It's on the Advanced Toolbar.
