Mail Rules: "on this machine only"

I use Outlook 2003. I have several rules to sort incoming mail. What
effect does the condition "on this machine only" have on incoming
mail?

Thank you.

It means it's a client-side rule and will run only when Outlook is open on
that specific computer. Some rules can be server-side rules when you use
Outlook in conjunction with Exchange. In that case, the rule can run
whether or not Outlook is open. If you don't have an Exchange mailbox, all
rules are client-side.

What happens if you try to export these rules and then import them on
another system? I seem to recall that I tried that once, and none of
the rules would work.

I had to manually reset all the rules to what they were on the
original machine.

Brian,

This may be "correct" but it is amazingly user-hostile. Any way to
remedy this without manually resetting each and every rule???

As far as I know, no. When a rule is stored, the name of the machine on
which it was created is stored as well and as far as I can tell, that's a
hidden value that you cannot change.
