Transferring Outlook 2002 info WITHOUT having create .pst
I had a system upgrade and the old C: drive was installed in the new system
as D: The old C: drive has all of my e-mail and settings. Is there anyway to import from the old drive WITHOUT having created a .pst backup? Hope so...would hate to have to take the drive back out of the new machine. Thanks, Chris |

Well firstly you dont want to import - can cause probs
Simply copy old pst to werever, do NOT overwrite any existing pst You may have to take ownership of the file, in order to copy http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421/en-us Then in OL FileOpen Data File Further details: http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/backupandrestore.htm "Chris Wiles" wrote in message ... DL, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, there is no back up .PST to copy.
Any other suggestions? If you have your old drive connected, then your old PST should still be on that drive unless you took steps to wipe it out, Look in D:\Documents and Settings\yourname\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. If you see a PST there, that's probably your old data. Open it with FileOpenOutlook Data File. Never import from a PST. -- Brian Tillman |

OK...I see it there...thanks.
Why should I not import the .PST? "Brian Tillman" wrote: Chris Wiles wrote: DL, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, there is no back up .PST to copy. Any other suggestions? You're missing the point. Importing an entire PST corrupts your profile. Outlook does not understand
how to do that and instead creates a duplicate PST file that you cannot close. Moreover, importing PST's will lose: 1. Custom Forms 2. Custom Views 3. Connections between contacts and activities 4. Received dates on mail 5. Birthdays and anniversaries in calendar 6. Journal connections 7. Distribution Lists Opening a PST file will preserve all of these. That is why we do not advise people to import a PST file into Outlook. If none of that concerns you, then be my guest. Import away! -- Russ Valentine [MVP-Outlook] "Chris Wiles" wrote in message ...
