Outlook 2007 won't work with pst files
I had outlook 2003 set up on my computer with 2 pst files to archive my older
mail to. When I upgraded to 2007 it now locks up when I try and open the program. If I remove my pst archives then it runs without a problem. Anyone else had similar issues? |

Are these .pst files both on your local hard drive?

I had 2003 on my machine and the only choice it gave me was to upgrade. It
migrated all my settings and data files itself. This is actually the beta 2 that was posted to msdn yesterday so I don't know if this is a new ability. Outlook 2007 won't work with pst files
I just installed the Office Pro 2007 Beta today on 2 different computers, and
had this same exact problem. This is the new Beta 2 download that was just released yesterday. The exact scenario I performed under: Both systems had Office 2003 Pro installed with all features except language settings. All Office 2003 updates were installed. I installed Office 2007 Beta and told it to keep my previous version of Office. It said it would uninstall Outlook 2003 no matter what, so I said OK. After the install completed, every Office 2007 program seemed to work fine... except Outlook. When I tried to launch Outlook 2007, it would get to the point where it said "Migrating email settings" or something close to that, and then it would just hang. Both of these computers are setup through an Exchange 2003 server (2 separate servers, same version of Exchange and Windows SBS 2003). Outlook 2007 froze in the exact same spot on both PCs. To solve the problem, I ended the task for Outlook 2007 and then deleted all the files in my Outlook folder (under Docs and Settings). I relaunched the program, and it linked right up to my Exchange server and re-syncronized my mailbox. Voila! Everything was there as it should be. On another note-- I tried launching Outlook 2007 on a fresh user account on the same computer and it worked fine. So the issue is definitely related to upgrading from a 2003 pst or ost file to 2007. Quick followup to my post:
I just installed it on a 3rd computer with the same configuration as described below... and this time it worked great. I didn't have to delete my ..ost files. Pretty interesting. Two things to note that are possible reasons why this worked: a) I do not have any antivirus running on this 3rd pc b) My laptop was upgraded first, and I had to fix it by deleting my .ost files. It is possible that when Outlook 2007 created a new .ost file that it somehow updated my exchange mailbox, so that now when I installed Outlook 2007 on my 3rd pc (it connects to the same exchange mailbox and user account), it went through without a hitch because it already had the updated ..ost file. Simkin is right, it seems to be something with the ost file. I took your and
sue's suggestion and created a new mail profile with a new ost file and now i can add my old archive data files without problem. In answer to your question I was removing the pst data files that were associated with my profile through the mail interface in control panel. So let me get this straight. You did an in place upgrade of an Outlook 2003 profile that had 3 PST files, one default, 2 for archive. Outlook 2007 failed to open with no error message, yet you somehow opened it and removed the 2 archive PST files. I'm having trouble following your post. Outlook 2007 is uniquely poor at handling connections to PST files. Sorry, I'll go through it step by step to the best of my memory. It's pretty
similar to simkin's post. 1. I had outlook 2003 set up with an exchange connection which auto archived my older mail to 2 pst files. 2. I installed 2007 and selected upgrade. 3. When I opened up outlook it went through the "migrating account settings" spiel and then just hung with no error messages until I killed the process. None of the other 2007 apps had any problems. 4. After messing with this awhile I went into the mail configuration in control panel and deleted the 2 pst files off of my mail profile. 5. This let outlook open and function as normal but when I tried adding the pst files back to my profile in the control panel app or through data file management in outlook it caused it to hang again. 6. I tried creating a new mail profile in the control panel app and associated it with a new ost file (I tried this with the one that outlook initially created and it does not work) and once my mail resynched with exchange I tried adding my pst files in outlook and it worked fine. I looked through my error logs and did find one error. Hopefully this means something to someone. Just to clarify, I do mean ost files. I think outlook 2003 used pst files to

Dead wrong. Offline Exchange content has always been stored in OST files,
never PST files. Most Exchange administrators do not even want PST files in their users' profiles. You need to understand what you're doing and what you're saying. Once you do, if you think you have a beta issue, post it clearly and accurately. Ok, I couldn't remember if it used ost files or not. I'll let you tell our
server administrators that we can't use pst files so we need more space on the server. It seems you view me as an idiotic user that doesn't know what I'm doing. I personally don't care what you think of me but I'm not sure how you equate this with user error. If I try to use outlook after the beta installation is complete it crashes. If I create a different profile and use a blank ost file then it will let me use my pst files and doesn't crash. At least one other person has the same issue. Not at all. But an inaccurate and incomplete description of a problem just
wastes everyone's time at best and provides misleading information at worst. This would have been an important issue to try to track down. Very few users would be willing to sacrifice a functioning production Outlook installation to a beta installation, so the upgrade scenario is an important one to test. I'm sorry but you sound rude and unhelpful. This person clearly has a problem
with the Beta and I have a very similar situation (if you care to read above). I think he made a good effort at explaining what went on and you are very dismissive of his/her efforts. There is obviously something VERY WRONG with this beta if it is succeeding in screwing up mail inboxes. My own copy of the Outlook 2007 Beta 2 is apparently receiving messages but is somehow not 'rendering' them. IE There is no content whatsoever. I CANNOT READ MY MAIL. Another user is suggesting that, even after reverting back to Outlook 2003, these very same messages are toast, implying that OL 2007 Beta 2 is REALLY F^*&%Ā£* them up..... And I concur with that theory for the moment. Instead of complaining, how about using your 'expertise' to help us resolve it? That could suggest to someone like me that they already know about a ārender problemā but failed to let us know that Outlook 2007 B2 may or may not actually be of any use to receive mail. As in, they knew/know that many/possibly all emails WILL NOT EVEN DISPLAY in their Beta 2 software, far less allow someone to actually use it for the purpose designed - as an email management program. Even on normal, run-of-the-mill, otherwise fully functioning, MS Office machines this Outlook 2007 Beta 2 software sucks. I suggest that is a very cynical exploitation of my time and effort and that of all the others who I know will come out the woodwork as the Beta is downloaded. should come here and expect to find that answers to their questions already to exist. Often times they will be uncovering issues that have not been seen before, especially if they are using the beta in an untested or unsupported scenario (as are the both of you). It is best to turn off all email scanning with all versions of Outlook.
Always has been. I agree there is no argument here. My only point is that simply posting symptoms without detailed information on how your installation was configured, what error messages you received, and what other applications are running that affect Outlook makes a solution impossible. Those are the questions I asked at the outset. The answers to those questions would have discovered the problem. These are the issues that will start to appear as users install a beta in non-test environments. Outlook 2007 won't work with pst files
Even in Outlook 2003 and earlier there are a long list of problems caused by
incoming/outgoing email scanning. I use AVG and always disable that feature. Some of the known problems with the scanning enabled (AVG is actually better than Norton and others here) are multiple copies (100's) of emails sent out for each real one sent, a large message takes so long to scan that the connection times out but the scanner sends anyway to a black hole and the message never gets to the recipient but Outlook thinks it was sent, and blank incoming emails. Please tell me where I am complaining about it not working. It actually
functions quite well for a beta2 on the whole. All I'm trying to do is provide feedback and describe my problem so perhaps microsoft can fix it. Apparently some people don't read my messages very clearly and I end up answering the same question 3 times. If there's a communication problem then I don't see the need to be rude about it, especially from people that are supposed to be representative of microsoft's commitment to its user community. I know the hazards of installing beta software, I've been enrolled in the beta programs of their server level software. I don't ever remember anyone telling someone in the public forums that had downloaded it off msdn that they didn't know what they were doing and it was their fault. From now on I'll stick to ladybug (if they have it set up for office 2k7) and I won't have to deal with the egos of certain people. But you are not providing feedback to Microsoft. You are using a public beta
and posting in a public newsgroup. If you want to provide feedback to Microsoft, enroll in the private beta. I have no doubt your input would be valuable. When you post beta problems here, it is imperative that you provide complete and accurate information because we must start from scratch. This has nothing to do with egos.
