Why a "permanantly delete ..." quest when exiting Otlk 03 email?

Recently a question has started to appear whenever I try to exit (red X) from
Oulook 2003 e-mail: "Are you sure you want to permanently delete all files
and subfolders in the Deleted Messages folder?"
Why is this message appearing?
How can I make it go away?
Thanks
