Hi Everybody!
When I enable cached exchange mode and the .ost reaches 1Gb Outlook 2003 (fully patched) on Windows XP (fully patched) needs 100% CPU and slows down extremely. Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition is also fully patched and runs on a fully patched Windows Server 2003. Antivirus software does not scan *.ost and turning it of does not help. Any Tips or hints to find a solution for this problem would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks in advance! Martin |

Hello Martin,
Based on my experience and research, this issue could be caused by different reasons. To narrow down this issue, I recommend you try the following steps: Step 1 =========== Please create a new .pst file, and move half data of the 1GB mailbox to PST, and then check if the performance is better. If not, please continue move most data to PST, and then check the result. Step 2 =========== Please test Outlook in the Safe Mode. The Safe Mode will disable all add-ins or extensions that will not start, or a corrupted resource, file, registry, or templates. Click Start--Run, type "Outlook /Safe" (Quotation marks are not included and there is a space between Outlook and /safe) and press Enter. For more information, please refer to the following Knowledge Base (KB) article: 197180 How to use additional command-line switches that are not included in http://support.microsoft.com/?id=197180 296192 OL2002: Additional Command-Line Switches http://support.microsoft.com/?id=296192 Note: This article also applies to Outlook 2003. If the issue does not occur in Outlook Safe Mode, let's use the steps below: (1) Delete some Outlook .dat files: Click Start - Search - Files or Folders, search for the "outcmd.dat", "extend.dat", "frmcache.dat", "views.dat" files in the hard disk. Then, rename them to .old files. For example: rename outcmd.dat to outcmd.old. If you cannot find some of these files, please ignore them. For your information, basically, you can find these files in the following folders: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\FORMS (2) Backup and then delete the following registry keys: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Exchange\Cli ent\Extensions HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outloo k\Addins Hope this helps.
