Default make Activesync work again safely after an 8503001F error

I have an IPAQ HW6915 with WM 5.1(in fact CE 5.1) , ActivSync 4.1 and Outlook
2002.
History :
my PocketPC used to work fine with Outlook in terms of Synchronization but
after having experienced some problems with Outlook I decided to re install
it. What a nigthmare! I had to re do it a dozen time (and event an Outlook
2000 re install as well)
Now Outlook 2002 works fine but unfortunatelly(for some reasons) with an
older version of my contacts and calendar.

My problem :
When I try to synchronize I get the well known 8503001F support error code.
All recommendations I have read on the net to solve that problem are :
"delete the the mobile device" in the activesync file menu and I'll work fine
again. but when I tried it, I got the message that says that I might lose
everything on my PocketPC!
but since the the only up-to-date Contacts and Calendar are on my PocketPC,
I don't want to try that.

My questions :
Is that true?(that I lose everyhting on my PocketPC y deleting the device)
Is there a way to save my current Calendar and Contacts on my PocketPC
before I try anything with the ActiveSync options?
are there other ways to get out of this mess?

thanks for your help.

Contacts and calendar are kept in a Personal Folders (.PST) file, it sounds
like you're using an older copy of this file. Try searching for .PST files
(which may be marked hidden or system, so be sure to search for such); the
largest should be the newer file. From there, 'File|Open|Outlook Data File'
should get your data back. Note that this assumes Contacts and Calendar
were in sync before the reinstall. As to your PPC, there are several backup
utilities available for them that will save to a (CF, SD, Mini-SD, etc)
memory card and this is how I backup my WM5 smartphone.

thanks Hal for the tips.
Yes I did find in an outlook.pst the version I was looking for and was able
to open it. However in the 'outlook today'( I assume this is how it
translates from the french 'outlook aujourd'hui') which is the active folder
'calendar' and 'contacts' cannot be renamed to put the correct calendar and
contacts.
For Contacts I managed to select and copy all entries but for calendar
selection and copy is not possible...so I am stuck with 2 versions. and I
wondering how to select the right calendar to synchronize with the PPC

Regarding the backup utility I have taken a look at a few but it seems that
they all need to be downloaded using ActiveSync...which I need to make work
before anything and then take the risk of losing my contacts and calendar
data as described in the previous post. Risks are limited to calendar now
since I have been able to restore the Contacts.
life is difficult when the mess starts to hit you...:-)))
again thanks much Hal.

Is your Outlook 2000 installed in Corporate/Workgroup mode or Internet Mail
Only mode? (HelpAbout will tell you.) FOr CW mode, click ToolsServices
and you can choose the PST that will be the delivery location on the
Delivery tab. For IMO mode, select the PST you want to be the delivery
location and click FIleProperties. There'll be a "Deliver new e-mail to
this PST" (or something similarly worded - I don't recall the xact works)
selection After selecting the delivery location, stop and restart Outlook.

What I would probably do is make the .PST you found the default and close
the older one. ActiveSync should then use the one you found. As to the
backup utility, some of them (SPB is one) will allow you to just download
and run the .CAB file. For those that don't, you can often run the
installer, find where it put the .CAB file, copy the .CAB to your PPC and
run it.
