On our network this person has a pst file that is 1.2gb, but in outlook when
i look at the file size it is 46 mb. He did just delete a bunch of things but
why in outlook it shows its 46mb or so and when you actually browse out to
where the file is at it is 1.2 gb

Deleting items does NOT reduce the size of a .PST file, compacting it does.
Try compacting the file and see if it changes the file size.

Yes this worked thanks. So when people delete a lot of things out of a pst
you have to compact it for the actual file to change to the correct size?
