How to clone backup style of all Outlook 2K settings to one folder
All my data resides on drive D: while bootable drive is C:.
Also, ALL the settings for Outlook Express (for example) are relocated or cloned to one folder on drive D:. Thus: 1. If I need to reinstall from fresh a drive C:, all I need to reconfigure OE (for example) is to redirect it to that folder in drive D:. 2. To backup all those settings and newsgroup messages, all I need is to copy that single folder to my backup drive E:. Where can I read about ALL registry keys/data and anything else I might need to modify in order to accomplish the above for Outlook? By ALL settings I also mean per individual users and global settings. I use Outlook 2000 + SP3 on W2K+SP4. Thanks, David |

I own True Image 10.
While asking to backup ONLY Outlook's "User Settings" (I don't need the emails themselves because I already have a much better solution for that), it was unbeliveable and unacceptable slow. It is a job that should take no time. So it turns out not to be "...simpler..." at all. BTW The main reason I have Acronis is for drive imaging & cloning which I haven't tried it yet. I hope for these main purposes it will play much better otherewise it will go out the "window" (with and without quotes... :) ). In recent years, I have very little tolerance to SW products that have major bugs, including performance. I don't even bother to call (let alone write emails) to "support". Since I am a hands on user, if the product(s) is unacceptable, I toss it away and solve the problem myself. My yardstick for these jobs is Symantec's Ghost (especially their last version which was 2003) which is superb but they cancelled that product line and switched to Norton Ghost 9 & 10 which is not really for disk imaging & cloning. Many of Outlook's settings are in the registry, so there is no file you can copy that contains them. However, this is a good list of the files that you can back up: http://www.slipstick.com/config/backup.htm -- Brian Tillman |

Oh, and keep in mind that just putting Outlook's files back in the folders where they originated won't restore Outlook to its previous state. As to the registry keys, The HLCU and HKLM \Software\Microsoft\Office trees are good places to start, along with HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Profiles -- Brian Tillman |
