Can't recreate old profile with new Outlook 2007 install + Connect
Hello everyone, Please send someone on the Outlook team to look at this post. I have been scratching my head about this for the better part of a week, and despite best efforts, am absolutely flummoxed about how to recreate my old Outlook 2007 folders & contents. I have all of the file contents of the old user AppData -- Microsoft -- Outlook -- Local and -- Roaming folders. Restoring things seems to require something other than just copying the old .PST file to the new location (before or after the new install), and I am wondering what else I should copy, or try. Bottom line is: Whether I install Outlook Connector before or after I put the old .PST file back using either a direct file paste or an import, the old folder structures are not recreated. It's as though the thing simply isn't importing the old folders, calendar, tasks, etc. etc. The old account briefly appears in the "Mail Folders" sidebar while I'm in the middle of working with the last screen of the process under File -- Import. But as soon as I start importing, the old account totally disappears from the sidebar again, no matter what Import options I try! The live.com account, which seems determined to become the default, has none of the folder structure I need: No calendar subfolder, no tasks subfolder, etc. So there's no way to manually rebuild the folder tree of the old PST file and have it import the calendar, tasks, etc. Would adding a new account to Outlook help? Would a new account include the missing elements of the old folder structure (with calendar, tasks, etc.) in it? Would I be able to import the old .PST contents into the new account if I mimicked the folder structure that the old .PST contains? 1) The create new account options ask for all sorts of configuration info that I don't particularly need -- my default account was just a set of totally offline folders, unlinked to any particular account, which is the way I wanted it. 2) If I do set up a new account mimicking the old folder structure, with calendar, tasks, etc., what options do you choose under import? What option for the handling 'duplicates' screen? What option for the 'current folder / same folder' screen? * * * The other thing to know is what kind of hell you can get into if you ever uninstall Outlook Connector. This is one of the more pernicious add-ins, in case you haven't experienced the loop of errors for yourself. I don't think it's been amply explained on this forum, and I don't know why the Office team hasn't fixed this. After uninstalling, here are the various levels of hell, each displaying a different error. For giggles: IF OUTLOOK CONNECTOR IS *AT ANY POINT* UNINSTALLED (regardless of the .PST file I'm using), OUTLOOK QUITS BEFORE OPENING, WITH THIS ERROR: 1. The Add-in "Outlook Connector Extensions" (msncon32.dll) cannot be loaded and has been disabled by Outlook. Please contact the Add-in manufacturer for an update. If no update is available, please uninstall the Add-in. 2. Cannot open your default e-mail folders. An unexpected error has occurred. MAPI was unable to load the information service msncon32.dll. Be sure the service is correctly installed and configured. WHEN KEEPING BOTH OLD .PST & OLD .NST FILE BEFORE INSTALLING OR REINSTALLING OUTLOOK CONNECTOR, OUTLOOK QUITS BEFORE OPENING, WITH THIS ERROR: Cannot open your default e-mail folders. The file C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Out look\outlook.nst cannot be accessed because it has been configured for use with a different mailbox. OK. It just got worse. This is a serious problem. Can anyone tell me the registry settings I need to change? This is a totally clean installation. All LOCAL and ROAMING folders cleaned out ahead of time. Old Outlook Connector and Office totally uninstalled. As soon as I launch Outlook, it gives me the "Where's the msncon32.dll?" error, and quits. a.k.a. "a.k.a." wrote: Hello everyone, Please send someone on the Outlook team to look at this post. Why? It's just a simple misconfiguration. From how I read it you used to have a pst-file set as your default delivery location and have the Outlook Connector installed for your Hotmail account. In your current configuration you've only configured the Outlook Connector and copied but not reconnected your original pst-file. Simply reconnect it via File- Open- Outlook Data File... Roady, This might be just the thing! Thanks! I'll get back to you and let you know. So if I understand what you're saying, the secret to ending the errors would be ensuring that I erase the account from within Outlook before I uninstall Outlook Connector? Still, let me reinforce the point: If you're right, and that is what's going on, that's NOT a foolproof uninstall system, and the Outlook team needs to get this sorted as an update to Outlook Connector. You shouldn't release a program to the public that breaks your system when you uninstall it in the MS-advised way, using Uninstall Programs. And, re this: The errors you get when you uninstall the Connector but do not remove the Hotmail account from your mail profile is normal; how is Outlook to load the Hotmail account when you removed the connector? That's not the full extent of the problem. I wiped the Connector AND the local and roaming profiles AND Office out last time to try to end the errors with a fresh install of Office, but even then, the registry for Outlook contains some sort of residue, even after a reinstallation of Office (and no use of the old local and roaming files). A fresh installation of the whole Office suite and it's still demanding Outlook Connector to even start Outlook? That's a problem. Really appreciate your suggestions, and I'll let you know how it turns out. a.k.a. "Roady [MVP]" wrote: Please send someone on the Outlook team to look at this post. Why? Worked brilliantly! Calendar, tasks and folders all intact, and default account is now switched. THANK YOU! Obviously there's a lot to learn when you're setting up Outlook. .... Still grumbling about losing a day over this. Should be more intuitive. Besides the suggestions above for an OC fix, what about being able to change the default account by a simple drag-and-drop reorganization of the Mail sidebar. Shouldn't have to be a find out how to do it. a.k.a. "Roady [MVP]" wrote: Please send someone on the Outlook team to look at this post. Why? It's just a simple misconfiguration. Can't recreate old profile with new Outlook 2007 install + Con
You can either delete the account before uninstalling the Outlook Connector
or remove it afterwards via Control Panel- Mail I wouldn't say that the application is flawed as it is you who manually added the Hotmail account. You would be right if installing the Outlook Connector immediately and automatically configured your Hotmail account but left it in your mail profile after uninstalling the Outlook Connector. With "wiping the local and roaming profiles" you mean you emptied those folders? That is not the way to remove settings and is a good way to corrupt your entire Windows profile. In addition it is good to remember that for most applications the rule is; uninstalling or reinstalling will not delete any data or settings.
