Outbox constipated

Just yesterday my Outlook 2003 outbox started to accumumulate messages even
though they had been sent. That is, those messages did not get deleted from
the outbox after a successful send.

I deleted the accumulated messages but then the process started again.

What could cause this and how do I fix it?

Many thanks!

Are you sure they have been sent?
Have you tried emailing your self to check?

A clue! Can't read the "Sent Items" folder. Outlook says run SCANPST (which
I hjave used for other problems). So assuming corruption in the "Sent Items"
file at the present time.

That's a sign that Outlook is not getting an acknowledgement that the server
has accepted the message. Outlook doesn't know that the message has been sent
and so retains it in the Outbox. One frequent cause of this is scanning
outgoing messages with an antivirus scanner. If you do that, uninstall your
AV program and reinstall it without any mail scanning feature.
